My biggest problem with food, I have discovered, is going out. I see and smell all this delicious food and I WANT it. Chocolates, cheeses.. those are my weaknesses. I have to keep telling myself in my head NO NO NO. And I MUST get away from it. I try to say to myself, I don't need this, I am going to look great! But that still doesn't help until I get away from the food. So I want to know- how do you fight your tempations? Help me out!!

I don't totally keep myself away from foods. It's all about portion control.. I find that if I don't allow myself to have something like chocolate (love it!) I end up going over the edge and over indulging. Work it into your day, that little treat. Or turn it into a little reward...you work out you get a dove chocolate. Also with the cheese (I'm from WI, we LOOOOVE cheese lol) I love the laughing cow, and totally light in calories and big in flavor!

It's not just about choosing not to eat foods, it's choosing the right amount and what kind. Good luck!
  • well for ME, i think about my EX telling me i'm fat!! i cant stand that, i had 2 kids, thyroid cancer and yes losing is NOT easy for me...plus binge eating is NOT good for my weight either. but since 3/1 i have been right on with the cal counting and staying in my limit. there WAS one day i decided to just splurge a little, went over about 300 cals :-(

but when you WANT something BAD if you can have a little and not over do it try that...or just think of the results of NOT eating that bad stuff!! (but YES the smells are hard to igonre)

sign on here when you want to eat somethig you know you really shouldnt!

i just take it one day at a time. if i see something yummy, i tell myself "if you really want it, you can come back and eat it tomorrow"... then when tomorrow comes, i've forgotten about it and the craving is gone, or tell myself again. if you really want it, you can have it tomorrow.

and as for cheese, i can honestly say it is my only vice in life! i gave it up for lent, just to see if i could do it, and it's easier now... i guess the church guilt helped me with that one. lol.

another thing i do, is look up the calories for a certain food, and usually am pretty disgusted and that keeps me away.

You know, I totally forgot about the laughing cow cheeses. I've eaten them before I started to try to lose weight and never thought about them being light... I've got to go to the store now lol

I do the same thing as jmarie, I tell myself that just because it's there doesn't mean I have to eat it RIGHT THAT MINUTE, it's not like food is going anywhere! I can always go have that treat some other time when it's better, when I've budgeted for it, etc, and usually I end up never getting whatever it was I thought smelled/looked so good at the time.

I like your idea! Maybe I'll try that.
When I put items into my food diary, just to see what it would do before I would eat it, I AM disgusted. Maybe I'll download the app on my Ipod so I can look up things when I am out.

Wellll, it is hard to do....especially when you can see and smell the food! The first thing I learned when trying to quit any bad habit (and I had a doosie let me tell you!) is to STAY AWAY from people, places and things that may trigger you.
But I know that is not always possible with food.
So, what I do then is try to think it through. Take a couple minutes and think how it would be to eat the food, swallow it, then think how it will feel in your stomach....then how you feel after it's eaten etc. etc.
Maybe then you'll be able to fight the craving.
    GOOD luck to you!

I fight temptation by having low cal options of my favorite foods tucked away. (Otherwise hubby eats them) Then when I get a craving for chocolate, I can go grab that 40 cal. fudgsicle at the bottom of the freezer, or go beside my bed and grab my 90 cal. snack pack bag. It feels naughty, grin, but doesn't break the bank in my calorie count.

Oh and for going out...which was the original question.....duh! I take a snack with me, apple and almonds or piece of low-fat cheese with 15 brown rice crackers, and always take my water!

Ok, heres what I do. I purposefully put myself into those types of situations. My reasoning behind it is to make myself resist eating it. The first time I did that I couldn't control the drool that was streaming down my face as I stuff my mouth full of salad. Over time it helps because all of my friends want to go out and eat. Well I am not going to allow this to stop me from hanging out with my friends. I am now at a point where I no longer crave fatty foods although I do crave tomatoes alfalfa sprouts and black beans. I hope this helps. By anymeans is this easy to do. You must want to do it. It also makes your willpower stronger. I also do not have cheat days or meals. It keeps me from wanting that crap.

Yes! I totally agree, eating sugar only makes you crave more sugar, and eating cheese makes ME crave more cheese! So, i say no to both!

There's a great quote out there "I've come too far to start taking orders from a cookie". Love that. I guess cheat days and/or cheat meals work different for different people. A 'cheat' a day would never work for me; if I try to have 'just a bite', I eat the whole thing. But an entire cheat meal once a week is different.

After 6 'perfect' days in a row, I reward myself with a celebration meal. It helps me to stay disciplined for 6 days, and to know that I can still give in to a craving, just not this second. Some people also do an entire free day. That seems to work for my hubby, and he never gains weight after eating what seems like a truckload of food all day. But for 6 days, he's disciplined. It's impossible to say you could never again have the foods that you love...just plan for them. A celebration meal (or free day) works two ways. 1) It gives your a psychological break and 2) the 'sick' feeling that generally follows from all of the carbs/fat/sodium etc. reinforces the fact that you won't want to eat it for at least another week!

And yes, the 'foods that you love' and crave change. Today my favorite cheat meal is 2 slices of thin-crust cheese pizza, light on the cheese, and a scoop of real ice cream. Two years ago...you don't want to know.
