TDEE and Exercise and Eating Back Calories

I am confused about this:

(example) If TDEE is 1000 (after picking sedendary) and I deduct 30% (300) for weight loss My goal to eat is 700 (remember this is just an example). So TDEE already figures in my exercise by my sedentary lifestyle. But if I exercise off 300 calories bringing my net to 400. shouldn't I be okay with eating back those 300 calories to bring myself back up to the amount the TDEE states, back to the 700?. . Assuming the calories burned are correctly figured.

    I think you may have figured TDEE wrong. What is your height, weight and age?

    It seems to be pretty decent, but they are all just estimates and are likely to vary quite a bit from person to person. All you can do is guestimate, eat, track, evaluate and adjust to what your true TDEE is and that takes time.

    At 1000, you've calculated your TDEE wrong.

    For a proper TDEE you need to be very accurate about exactly what you do.."Sedentary'" means you are laying in bed doing absolutely NOTHING. To figure out your proper TDEE you have to account for every hour of your day, you don't just "pick sedentary". Do you walk at all, do you do any exercise, cleaning, shopping, moving of any kind.. EVERYTHING. Most people who think they are sedentary are actually at least 'lightly active' . Heybales has a great spreadsheet linked in the "roadmap" thread to account for all these extras.

    IF you have calculated a very accurate TDEE then it WILL account for the exercise you have told it that you do. If you then do EXTRA things (like walking an extra day, or riding a bike for a little while) then you have to EAT those calories. MFP will NOT calculate an accurate TDEE - this is something that has to be looked at elsewhere.

    Well, besides using the wrong terms, you have the general theory of how MFP works right.

    Deficit to maintenance (non-exercise TDEE) is built into daily eating goal, so no matter if you exercise or not, you got the deficit.

    Now, here's the deal. Because of your choices, MFP probably assigned a goal lower than what would be reasonable. A bigger deficit than what would be wise.

    But if you eat back even the inflated calories for exercise, you should at least save yourself, because the slightly more than needed eaten on one day makes up for the under eaten on rest days.
    And some exercises are right on, like the walking and running level - if you hit the exact pace in the description.

    Total Daily Energy Expenditure

    What MFP calls maintenance, with no exercise.

    Changes daily obviously. Usually used in a manner of getting a weekly avg workout schedule, and avg back to daily amount.

    If your selection of activity level was correct, then that is a beginning estimate of how much you could eat to maintain weight.

    Therefore you just need to eat less than that to lose weight.

    Too much of a deficit, you'll risk losing muscle along with the fat. Too little and the daily inaccuracies may cause no real deficit.

    The lower limit is usually recommended to be your BMR as that site calculated, to help prevent losing muscle. Even if you do no weight lifting.

    The bare lowest limit for reasons of safety is 1200 for women that are sedentary.
    But that is for reasons of safety - just like minimum building codes for safety reasons. Not for performance, not for longevity, not for aesthetics.
    You interested in improving your body with exercise, or doing this long term, or looking good at the end? Don't do minimum for safety reasons.

    Make the line the BMR. Though above it on avg for the week is better. So MFP does deficit by block calories. But really, the less you have to lose, the less you should deficit, the more to lose is bigger.
    So if a lot to lose, over 50 lbs, 20% deficit to that TDEE. If 15 to 50 lbs, 15%, if below 15, 10% deficit.

    Use this spreadsheet linked in this topic to assist getting a good deficit based on your workout schedule, and how to tweak MFP to use it.
