HOW WILL YOU DEAL WITH UPCOMING HOLIDAY PARTIES???

hi Everyone !!!

last night I went to a cocktail party for a thai restaurant that I frequent downtown that has just celebrated 21 years in business...

there was a huge turn out and I have known about this for months.

so, this is how I handled it.. it was a cocktail party so waiters came around all night with finger food and it was an open bar.. I did not know what I was going to do regarding food decisions or a glass of wine til I got there.. my friends were with me.. and they know I am very dedicated in my quest to getting healthy...

Once I got there.. I decided I cannot give up their spring rolls .. but I can give up alcohol... I have not had soft drinks in months.. so last night, asked the bartender to put 3/4 ice in the glass and a tiny bit of Coca Cola.. and honestly thats all I needed.. the rest of the night I had water and lemon. Although I was definitely in spring roll heaven.. I enjoyed every single bite .. had 3 of them.. with peanut sauce.. decided chicken satay was relatively safe and a few shrimp... I did not ever feel guilty about having a very small piece of cake at the end of the evening.. I just decided coffee and cream were not necessary as I was already feeling full from my delicious night...

Its amazing how much we really do know what we need and do not need and the food that used to be a huge problem at big events.. really was a no-brainer last night...

I just hope during the busy holiday season.. you leave guilt out of it and enjoy your time with friends and family and yes.. eat and be merry !!!!!

:) Diane

    Hi Diane,
Thanks for sharing your experience with me. You sounded so chilled and seemed to take everything in your stride. well done!

I am very worried about the festive season, as I tend to become very inactive and normally drink and eat far too much. I am stressing about it, because I am off work from the 21st December until the 2nd January. How do I cope and manage my eating and drinking when there will be so much food and drink around???????

Debbie.. this is how I handled it before I even went in the door...

I decided I would go to this party to be with my friends.. not just for the food although its my fav restaurant in the city of Toronto...

I decided I would figure it out once I got in there.. I already looked at what the waiters were offering everyone and before I dug in.. had a little mental debate with myself over what I would and wouldnt do... I spent more time talking than I did eating and ate what I wanted to .. and slowly .. so I enjoyed everything including cake, that I wanted to.. and the rest of the day I just went light on my eating.. knowing what was coming at me last night

I think honestly it was easier than I thought and it will be easier for you too Debbie cause .. we have had since August to think about the changes we are making in our lifestyle and thats going to carry you thru this holiday season hun.. concentrate on having a good time and yes eat, because thats what its all about spending time with friends and family.. and it does not just pertain to holiday times .. its birthday and weddings and other important events in our lives

you will do fine hun !!!!! xx
  • I'm buying my dress next weekend and I'm hanging it up on my room on the wardrobe where I can see it. I'm going to take the picture of the model wearing it and put it on my phone, ipad, laptop and anywhere else I can think of.

For me, as far as the actual work party...realistically, this is the biggest social event of the year at work, so I will be drinking...wine with dinner (2 glasses-it's free) and a few Bacardis and diet 7ups should get me well pissed as I'm having a dry November and December (til Dec 14th, the party)...and I plan on eating two chicken breasts and salad before I go so I'm nice and full....maybe even a few brussel sprouts, too... and lots of water to quench my thirst from all the dancing.

    Our work parties are epic!
Here's the dress, which i have yet to try on, so it could be a diaster! I'm buying it in a UK10 and if it doesn't fit, I can blame no one but myself...training 5/6 days a week til then so I should be grand,..what if it was too big??!¬!???

dress is leather Hoxie Dress from a UK brand, All Saints Spitalfields, my fave!!

You did awesome and yes you can enjoy yourself and you don't have to have everything and you don't have to stuff yourself. And if you want a little more higher calorie foods at a social event you can eat less other days before and after the event. It is why I sometimes eat lower leading up to and after vacations or social events. Here is an awesome article with some ideas. http://johnbarban.com/whats-your-diet-and-exercise-plan-for-the-next-7-weeks/

the same way i deal with breakfast lunch and dinner daily.... eat what i want get a good nights sleep wake up the next day and go work out...

It is not that hard some of you act like you have court orders not to eat food\.
  • This is my concern too this year especially. I just discovered that after losing about 25 pounds this year I am actually 4 pounds heavier than I was the end of last November!! At Christmas I gained 8 pounds, lost most of it, gained about 8 in February on vacation, lost most of it, gained another 8 in the summer when we had a big 4 month reno project where we were working night and day and I rewarded myself with chips and chocolate. I've finally lost that too, now! So, I'm determined to stop yo-yoing (is that even FAIR to gain 8 lbs in two weeks?) and don't know how to control myself. If there are treats in the house I eat them til they're gone! You also can't possibly exercise enough to get rid of two dozen Christmas cookies a day! I love Christmas baking, and the family looks to me for it, cause none of my sisters-in-law bake, but we all like to eat it. I know I will have to give it up, but will struggle with the guilt of not providing yummies for the people I love. I figure one or two Christmas parties where I eat too much and have too much wine won't kill me, but it's the baking that has been my downfall. Sucks to know what to do and really not want to do it. Evil wants-to-be-chubby girl inside me says "Oh, you can go ahead and bake. You won't eat too many of them. You know you shouldn't, and so you just won't." Yeah, right! We all know that's impossible!!
Planning ahead, if you seriously worry about the gain, is, like several people have said, the only way that makes sense. If you are prepared for what you will encounter, you are less likely to fail completely. And yes, I know I can lose it again, but I would like to lose some NEW pounds, not the same ones over and over!!

  • I will eat all the food. I will walk around clenching my butt cheeks in my uber tight pants and having everyone wonder how I lost so much weight while 'miring my backside. That's the plan at least. Then I will take the cookie from their plate and eat that too. Om nom nom.

people who tend to be really overweight have more issues with food than the average person.. and its not about the food.. its just social events and food go hand and hand and not everyone is disciplined to be able to balance things.. its a learned habit.. most overweight people are wired differently.. they use food for different reasons, other than the nutrition it truly is ... and yes.. I have friends who are thin who have the same issue.. the difference is.. nobody notices quite the same way as they do about an overweight person trying to make better food choices at a function

Wired differently? Really? I was 220# two years ago... I don't think any of my "wiring" changed. But I made a decision that *I* was going to change, one way or the other. And not by deprivation dieting. But by forgiving myself for bad decisions, allowing myself a little fun, eating in moderation (usually), and moving my tail a little more. I stopped making excuses and justifications - and boom - new me slowly emerged. I enjoy the holidays - and the weekends - and I keep it tight during the week. That's my lifestyle and it works for me. :)

Keep bulking, drink water only with the exception of 3 energy drinks (no alcohol mixes), while out partying. Get 7 hours sleep everynight. Try my hardest to approach more than 5 attractive women each night (trying to build up confidence). Have a good vacation?

everyone is different .. I have talked at great length to my friends both on here and off this site who have had weight problems for years.. as have I.. and its about changing the "wiring" - meaning thought process... of how we deal with stressful situations and happy times too.. food is harder to deal with on many levels for people who are overweight.. thats why they are overweight.. if food was not an issue for some people.. then why would the diet industry be making a mint trying to get everyone to follow the latest diet craze.. honestly like you.. its about putting yourself first.. making the conscious decision to change your life and change your habits.. thats it in a nutshell .. eat well, healthy nutritious food and get yourself moving !!!

Sounds like you handled it like a pro! Eat the things you truly want, and don't stuff yourself with food just because it's there.
