Do you count cooldown into your calories burned?

I wear a HRM and take strength training classes 3 days a week. But I never know whether to count my cooldowns into the "calories burned" during my workouts. Anyone count your cooldown calories? Or do you just count your warmup + actual exercise?
Thanks!!
Thanks!!

Yep your body is still burning fat!0

yip I count it0

I personally only count my actual workout - I do my warm up start my watch for the workout then stop my watch to cool down ..... I wasnt sure when I started MFP and I figure I always rather be under my calorie burn than think I burned more than I actually did ...0

I do... because your body is still burning calories that you wouldn't have burned just sitting on the couch or any other everyday activity! It's a personal choice really... some do some don't!!!0

I count until my heartrate is back to normal so that does include the cool down and stretching portion of my classes. It's not enough to stress over though compared to the entire workout.0

I do. My cool downs aren't the typical cool downs though. I'm still working out but just at a much slower pace and my HR doesn't dip fast. When I'm done my HR is still around 135.0

Hello. I'm a personal trainer. Just thought I'd chime in. I wouldn't count it. If you're trying to lose weight, use those extra calories to be that many more calories you won't eat. We're not talking that many calories anyway. Why not apply those towards helping restrict a few more calories in your diet. It's doubtful your cooldown (in 1 workout) even equates to 100 calorie snack....you might find your weight loss goal attained a little quicker this way. Just a suggestion. Look for reasons to eat a little less, as opposed to eating a little more. Good luck!0

I do when I'm still in my target zone which most of the time is the full cool down. If I hit below 120 then I turn it off.0

No. Should I? I just give it up like my warm up I don't count.0

Thanks everyone!! And as some of you had pointed out, it's only about 25-30 extra calories for cooldown anyway and my HR by then is usually about 120-130. I probably also burn that much or even more just by walking home. lol I'll experiment and see how I do when not counting my cooldowns. All this time, I've been counting them into my calories burned. I doubt there will be much difference but thanks everyone, for all your feedback.

Good question , I usually dont count the ones for the treadmill, I plug in to do a twenty minute walk and it does the cool down for 5 minutes , but I only count the 20 minutes. If I do a DVD I do count it , Jillian's DVD's get your heartrate up quick I think:)0

No - I just count the workout. Not the warm up or cool down.
My HRM tells me that I am burning way more than the machines tell me I am burning. I usually take off 50 - 75 calories for every 1/2 hour of exercise anyway. So if my HRM says I burned 650 in 45 minutes of cardio I usually just log in 550 or 575. I figure that is a lot of calories to burn and while I eat most of not all of my exercise calories, this is my way of being sure I don't go over.0 -
If I am subtracting 100 or so from my count to cover what I burned anyway if I hadn't gone to the gym I do. But if I'm not backing out any double count calories then I switch off my HRM when I am done and not when my HR is back to normal. I figure that skipping counting those helps offset accounting for what's already in my cal count. I still usually round down on top of that too though since I think my HRM counts a little high (per my Bodybugg)0

its whatever makes you comfortable.
some people like to put their whole calories to see how much they actually burn, and other people just want just know what they burn during just the workout.
but in reality, it should be what you think is best for yourself. maybe if you put the whole calories burn you might get result. (idk)
or maybe, you dont put the whole thing and just the workout... you might see more result. (idk)
if i was to get mine hrm... i would play with it. until i see result.
but i like to trick mind myself.
so i if burn 300 calories i would tell myself you burn 250. or something like that.0 -
I usually count my warmups as part of my workout since the warmup actually includes some cardio (jumping jacks, squats, etc.). But since the cooldown (for me) is just stretching and it brings my HR back down to about 120-130, I think I'm going to experiment and not count it during my workouts next week.
Thanks everyone! :happy:0 -

Thank you so much because I was wondering if I should count the cool down as calories burned. I do count my warm up though because I do the warm up twice and more aggressively than the instructor (on the dvd).0

yes i count it0

^this, only actual workout for me also.0 -
Are you adjusting the calories you get on your HRM to deduct your BMR from your workout time? If you aren't doing that you're already double dipping to start with.0
