For a while, I used a $50ish Timex that I was fairly happy with until I realized that it was giving me credit for burning WAY too many calories (a good 50-60 percent higher than MFP's estimates for running, which are pretty darn accurate.) I now use a Polar F4, and absolutely love it. The heart rate monitor function is very reliable, the calorie burn is valid, and it stores data for several workouts. The only bell/whistle it doesn't have is a GPS, but that's the reason it's closer to $70 than $150. When I run, I take my phone, and use the Nike Plus app, which gives me my mileage, so I don't need that feature on a watch. The Polar system is also water proof, so that's another feature if you're inclined to take it swimming.0

I am buying a Polar FT4 because so many forum friends recommended it. I like that it computes calorie burn and heart rate. On Amazon it runs under $70. There are more advanced Polar HRM for under $100. Some have a GPS to track your running.0
