Hi. I'm starting a low calorie diet to lose weight but I'd like to know if I have to give up my diet soda habit? It is zero calories but I have heard bad things about it. Can I lose weight if I drink this but stick to my calorie goal and workout?

Try it and see.
Some people claim that it can make you crave other sweet things.
For other people it actually helps SATISFY a sweet craving.
For me, this is the case. The 'fizz' also helps me to feel fuller in the short term too.
Some people say "but it's full of chemicals". Respectfully, I'd suggest they are idiots .0 -
I wouldn't limit myself too much...it's better to drink a diet coke than being too disciplined and then binging on junk food, which is what would happen to me if I stopped allowing myself even zero-calorie things.0

its not going to make you gain weight by drinking it, it will cause tooth decay tho as its acidic. not as acidic as normal coke, so if you had a couple a week it probably wouldn't impact your dental health, but everyday might do.
I used to love diet soda. I gave up everything except diet soda, but eventually I managed to kick it. I had a diet coke the other day (although it was movie theatre coke, so its not top quality) and i didn't enjoy it at all.
so yah it won't impede your weightloss, and if it helps you feel like you get a sweet treat without the cals which helps you stay on track instead of feeling deprived its probably better to do that than feel punished by the cruelty of the world. you should be allowed diet coke.0 -
Although diet coke probably isn't the healthiest option, if it is helping you at the moment don't worry too much about it. There are worse things you could be drinking. Changing everything at once can make things difficult for some people. When you are ready, you may want to reduce how much you drink but don't stress too much. If you are changing your diet to be more healthy you are already on the road to a healthier life. One step at a time....0

it hasn't stopped me from reaching my goal0

It may be zero calories but the effect of artificial sweeteners cause us to eat more. Perhaps you can have it once a week as a treat but not on a regular basis.0

For me it causes me to eat less.
(I tried stopping it when I had a stomach upset and was recommend to remove caffeine and fizzy drinks as a precaution - though it turned out the cause was something else - I definitely found myself eating more/wanting more sweet stuff.)0 -
I agree with the above. Most studies that try to claim that diet sodas make you gain weight, if you read further into their reports, it's based off of the assumption that it makes you(everybody) consume more junk in general if you drink diet sodas. If you have the discipline to not snack more than you should even IF diet sodas do make you feel snacky, then it shouldn't make a difference on your weight loss.0

hmm interesting thanks for the responses. for me i grab one when i feel like eating and if fills me up, stops me from grabbing something with calories0

it is interesting how these myths gain momentum, isn't it? If artificial sweeteners cause cravings for sugar then don't give in to the craving. The worst thing diet colas can do is dissolve your teeth0

I drink coke zero quite often because I enjoy the taste and it helps me curb my sweet tooth. I don't think there's really any harm in drinking it, the only downside to it is some bloating and it's not good for your teeth (obviously). Other than that, I say if you like it then just drink it.0

Coke Zero tastes more like reg coke. and has less sodium in it as well. That's all I buy is the zero brands now.0

I have lost a total of 87 pounds (35 before starting here) and I drink diet coke every day. It helps me to not be as hungry. I am sure water is better for you, but one step at a time.0

do you have any peer reviewed journals you could post about this. love to read the science behind it.0 -
A quick google shows that at least one study does show this.
Unfortunately it's a study on rats, with those on humans coming to different conclusions.
So there we have it - if you're a rat, may be a good idea to avoid artificial sweeteners!
Humans however, it's generally been shown to be good for weight loss.0 -
I can only go from personal experience. I have 1 (sometimes 2) everyday and it has not hindered my progress. I do not have extra cravings when I drink them.
I do brush my teeth right after every one I have though.
Lately I have been on a Fanta 0 and Sprite 0 kick.0 -

They also cause me to eat LESS, not more.0 -
sparkling water with some lemon juice and sweetner = home made fanta
sparkling water with any sort of juice or tea and sweetener of your liking = instant anything0 -
Aside from the dental issues it may cause, I wouldn't worry about diet soda. If it makes you happy and increases dietary adherence, this is a great thing.0

I gave it up but not completely..Tried but the headaches were unbearable so I had to wein myself off. I will have an occasional DC if I'm out but don't buy it anymore...I find if I have it in the house its all I will drink, keep in mind I had a horrible DC addiction drinking 3 or more big gulp cups a day! Have no idea if it's helped or not but do feel less bloated probably because I'm drinking more water!0

I drink 3-4 a day with no issues, losing 2lbs a week. also drink water it washes away the acid. No issues. I have drank it since I was 13 and have no issues. No weight issues till I hit 40. No food cravings, satisfys me. Full of chemicals yes, but so are life saving Drugs. Drink it till you don't want to . If you notice it causing a problem for you then you will on your own not want to drink it.0

DON'T BRUSH!
The acid softens the enamel.
Hitting it with toothpaste and a brush is like using a file.
chew gum0
