Dieting for Stroke Prevention - PLEASE HELP

Hi everyone,

My Dad has had a series of mini-strokes recently, and the doctors have told him that losing weight would dramatically reduce his risk of stroke. Does anyone out there have any information on ways to diet for stroke prevention? I have been doing research online, but I was wondering if anyone here is personally affected and if they could make their diaries available so I can get ideas to help him. I just sent him the link for this site today and he is going to join when I show him how to use it. If any of you would mind if I added you as a friend, I would GREATLY appreciate it. I love my Dad sososososososo much, and I want to do everything I can to help him. If you have any advice, please share. Love you all!!

Anita

Hi. My dear friend's husband had a mild stroke (mild this time) and his doctor told him to lose weight too. His doctor told him to do low impact exercise (walking, swimming) but I'm not sure if that was because of the stroke or the fact that he is really out of shape... Otherwise, counting calories & moving your tail ;-) is really the only way to go -- it works for all of us (no matter why we are trying to lose weight!)

My mom was mentioning the correlation between stroke and cholesterol. She had a TIA this summer and talked to her Neuro about it. I don't have all the details but Google stroke and Cholesterol, I am sure tons of articles will come up.

My dad had a massive stroke about 6 years ago. He can no longer use his left arm or left leg. He went from travelling the world one day (for work which he loved) to not being able to walk the next.

His was linked to his smoking habit. So if your dad is anywhere around nicotine / smoking / etc get him away from it. My dad still smokes and the doctor's tell him he is a ticking time bomb...but he don't care. He thinks his life is over already and no one can get thru to him.

I would also make sure to watch cholesterol and ask the doctor's what vitamins/minerals/exercise would be best for him. I am going to guess they will say cardio but I am far from a medical professional so please ask his doctors who know his full history.

From the American Stroke Association is this helpful link on nutrition after a stroke:

My MIL had a mild stroke 2 years ago and she physically is just fine (mentally is a whole 'nother story).

    Sorry to hear this.
Your doctor should give you a proper diet, not just losing weight. You should not be asking this on public forums, it's the matter of life to have a healthy diet for people with strokes history.
  • I will use the forums for their purpose, which is to share knowledge. Thanks to everyone who offered helpful posts! I will keep looking as well. xo
  • Another way to go mainly because most men don't like counting calories is have his family doctor find a Wellness Clinic. They help with every aspect of your life and especially where there has been health problems. I've had one stroke and a mini stroke, it's not fun. I wish your Dad the best.:flowerforyou:
  • Thanks for the suggestion! I am looking wellness centers up in his area right now. Best of health to you <3
