Diet Know-It-Alls /rant
I saw my friend put up her status about how she's struggling to lose weight. I offer my support and tell her that if she just keeps up the healthy diet and exercise, she can do it. Her friend jumps in to tell me how I can lose weight naturally without diet or exercise by alkalizing my body and checking my pH balance. (To the point of spamming my inbox with messages, I don't even know her) Huh. Really? I understand detoxing is nice but I don't think that alone can achieve and maintain weight loss. I've never heard a doctor say, "you're fat because of the acidity in your blood." She also told me that exercise has no long-term benefits and I was only hurting myself in the end. Oh and she's a nurse so obviously she knows everything and gave me her phone number for a consultation. I'm not going to call her. Ugggh. *facedesk* Sorry, had to get that off my chest.

Most likely.*siiigh*0 -
I am a nursing student, and I have never heard of that pH thing for weight loss specifically. That is never taught in nursing school. pH is important for a lot of body processes but not solely anything related to weight loss -_-.
Exercise not only assists weight loss, but it is benefial for overall health. Everyone knows this, and someone telling you otherwise and shamelessly waving some sort of credential to support that (urgh I am enraged!) has other ulterior motives. I agree with the seller part.0 -
Annoying, isn't it? I often run into people telling me all my problems will be solved if I go paleo or GAPS or ....
No thank you very much please.0 -

Pyramid scheme comes to mind. Just cause she's a nurse doesn't mean she's healthy or understands proper nutrition. Best luck.0 -
I am tired of people pitching tricks and shortcuts. Ways to fool your body into losing weight or taking shots or fads.
It will take a long time but good healthy nutritious diet eating at a caloric deficit and working out is the best way to do it (in my opinion). I can do a low carb diet and lost weight at triple the speed but I will put it back on even faster, its not sustainable. I am not looking for a "DIET" I am looking for a healthy lifestyle.
There is no medical evidence that shows the OP here is wrong and healthy diet and exercise is worthless.. That's ridiculous.0 -

I was rolling my eyes until I got to the end. She's a nurse?!?!?!? Now I'm just mad!0 -

Yeah. I was wondering if she was daydreaming throughout her nursing classes or what. I don't know how she got her degree, if she even is telling the truth about that. Exercise has benefited me in so many ways and to suggest otherwise is laughable. I feel much better since working out and the quality of my sleep has greatly improved.Just reply with," if I eat 10 avocados a day, with 2 cups of olive oil. Which is over 6,000 calories. Will i lose weight? those foods are alkalizing. Also, how do you change your pH level with out changing your diet? SO this means I can eat highly acidic foods while adding pH drops to my water?"
I was wondering about that. If I eat healthy, won't my pH balance just sort itself out? I love olive oil and use it in a lot of my cooking.I am tired of people pitching tricks and shortcuts. Ways to fool your body into losing weight or taking shots or fads.

I know. It's absurd. Why not do something you can maintain for the rest of your life? If my friend falls for her trap, I'll be sorely disappointed. Diets are temporary, lifestyles are long-term. That's the difference. Buuuut people have short attention spans so it HAS to be quick or they'll give up. I started this journey back in May 2010. I wanted to give up but I never did. I wanted to be done in 2 years but if I get there in three, that'll be just as well.I was rolling my eyes until I got to the end. She's a nurse?!?!?!? Now I'm just mad!
Apparently. I have a relative who uses her medical background to push her agenda too so it's not just this woman. It just makes me worry about the well being of the patients she deals with. Hopefully the doctors in her facility are better.0 -
Makes me laugh until I realise just how many people are susceptible to falling for crap like that.0

This is the first time I've ever heard anyone claim that exercise has no health benefits and is only hurting you in the long run..wth?
I agree with the sales-pitch theory.0 -
Spending money on weird and wonderful diets / machines / etc - not for me. It is sad that people use their qualifications to make money out of other's insecurities and issues.
Eat a calorie deficit within reason, eat to my target, get some exercise (walking - free!!) and off the weight goes.
I am a nurse (or was) so you better believe me   :laugh:0 -
just because someone says they are a nurse doesnt mean they really are.
these are the interwebz after all.0 -

Yeeeeeah. That's why weight loss products are a multimillion (or billion) dollar industry. Feeding off people's insecurities and lack of knowledge about how the body works = profit!Well there are many foods that people consider healthy which are acidic. So not necessarily.
Like oranges? I don't eat a lot of those. But yeah, I see what you're saying. I figure that if I eat healthy and take care of myself, my body will be just peachy...if not, it's probably something alkalizing can't fix.Spending money on weird and wonderful diets / machines / etc - not for me. Oh yeah, I thought of that too. It's just some ridiculousness that I wanted to share with the world.0 -
Exercise could hurt you in the long run... if, say, your exercise of choice is to lift a bowling ball and drop it on your food repeatedly.
But otherwise, spam and scam. Report her for violating TOS.0 -
Well I am a RN, and she's full of sh#@. Exercise benefits everyone, and I am not even going to say what I think about the food thing. Report her!!!0

I don't think Facebook flags people for that, since it's not a fitness site.0 -

It's amazing how many nurses think they know EVERYTHING there is to know about the human body and anything to do with it!! I realize they went to college, but even doctors don't know everything there is to know about the body. The acidity in the blood is a new one though. . . LOL
I'm not bashing all nurses, I have just come across more than one who are know-it-alls.0 -

this reminds me...
ever notice how a medical doctor doesn't have a job, he/she has a "practice"? or when he/she is working, it's called "practicing medicine"?

Well, she hasn't sent me anymore messages. If she does bother me again, I'll report her. I believe in giving second chances to some people.0 -

Sigh, I was doing my clinical practicum one day, and this nurse, my buddy nurse who is supposed to mentor me told me that I should try out ___________ product because it really helps you lose pounds without exercising... -_- I just looked at her in disgust and asked my instructor if I could have another buddy nurse because this one doesn't know what she was talking about. lol. I wouldn't mind an actual know-it-all. But not a false one who spreads inaccurate information that would harm a person in the long run.0 -

Some people really shouldn't get into the industry. My cousin married a nurse who is an avid Dr. Oz fan. She's always preaching the word of Oz and his product of the day on her page and it makes me sick. She even has her toddler watch it with her who chants "Oz, Oz, Oz!" It scares me a bit.0
