I understand they are quite controversial. What do people think?

you mean for rolling your muscles after a work out - if so - yes they do at least for my husband and I.
We will use them to roll our legs and back an hour or so after a big workout and usually 24 - 36 hours after when DOMS start to settle in.
Part of it is using proper techniques and really getting a good roll - I used a few different videos on You Tube to find ones that work for me.0 -
Yes, that's what I mean. Thanks0

As a method of self-induced torture to help loosen up tight muscles: yes.0

If it doesn't feel like torture, you're doing it wrong. I use mine religiously. In fact, I have a date with it tonight after running a race yesterday.0

Foam? Meh, I use a piece of 4" PVC. Yes it's slight torture, and yes it really works. Make sure you have a safe-word established with your roller so you can tell it when the pain is too much.0

My favorite post run torture device. Yep, they work.0

Love it. I will feel all tight and sore, and after a rolling session, I feel so much better and loose. It's almost as good as a massage, maybe better because you can really hone in. I use the rumble roller, so it's pretty hard core for me. Takes 40 minutes just to get through my calves. The rest of my body doesn't take as mong, but my calves are so dang tight. It takes a while to move through.0

Controversial? Since when?0

Yes!!! I love the foam roller, for real. Whenever I have access to one after a run, I will use it. Love the feeling , it only hurts for me if I haven't rolled it out in awhile.0

Controversial? Since when?
When I googled it I read that some people think they don't work.0 -
Yes. They work. I have an inappropriate level of attachment to my foam roller. It's amazing. As others said, if it doesn't hurt, you're doing it wrong.0
-
So can anyone recommend a good one?0
-
The SO and I love ours. We just have one like this: http://www.amazon.com/36-White-Foam-Roller/dp/B002DPX3GS0

for ultimate pain you need a rumble roller.0

Yes, and if you ever develop IT band syndrome one will become your best friend.0

Haha - I dropped in to talk about curling your hair.0

yep...they are a litttle easier to use on your legs than your upper body..but they definitely help your body open up more before and after a workout
one of the best investments ive made0 -
As a method of self-induced torture to help loosen up tight muscles: yes.
Once you get past this phase they are amazing. I can't live without mine now.0 -
