Interval Training

I've read in several places about interval training. Somewhere in the South Beach diet it mentions that it is an ideal type of exercise for those wanting to lose weight. It involves intense exercise with rests in between, allowing the heart to drop back down. I don't see anything like it here in the exercise area. (Weight watchers doesn't have it on their list either.) I know a professor at our university who wrote a paper about it years ago and called it wave exercising. She had several of the sports teams get on board with it.
If I wanted to do it, how would I know the calorie count, etc.? I have done it in the past on the road or on my old but trusty Nordic tracker.

Thats been my primary program since I began. Bang for buck the Intervals work well. As far as calorie count goes on my Elliptical counter I burn 1/3 to 1/2 more doing intervals 40 min than just a steady pace for 40 min. The thing you cant count is what happens post workout. Your heart still is doing the same ups and downs for some time after, therefore working out your body while your resting. Try 10 min of warmup med pace, then 30 sec as fast as you can go, followed by 90 sec to recover-same med pace as warmup. Do 10 sets of those(20 min) followed by 10 min of cool down. You will be amazed by the sweat Good luck!0
