First 5k!

Hello! I am running my first 5k this weekend, and I am very excited. I have put in the training, and hopefully I will get a good (or average...) time! Does anyone have any tips for race day? Like what to eat, or how to stretch, or how to pace myself? Anything would be appreciated, thank you!

Don't do anything different on race day then you have already been doing. Don't eat anything different, do wear anything different, don't stretch differently. Whatever you have done while training yourself for this run to this point is all you should be doing.

For pacing, that's more difficult if you haven't already been training outside to get your pacing right. I'd recommend trying that at least once before this weekend because it's going to feel A LOT different then it did to run on the treadmill. I seriously outpaced myself the first time I ran outside. By almost two minutes per mile pace kind of outpacing.

I found my pacing rhythm by using RunKeeper on my phone to tell me what my pace was and then learning to know how that felt and then continue to run at that pace, or how to push myself to go faster when I wanted to.

    Other than that, have fun!
  • I was just going to post something similar! My first 5K is Thursday morning. Kind of spur of the moment, wasn't planning to run one until spring, but what the heck. I'm nervous, but the worst that can happen is I finish last. At least I'll have finished!!

    Good luck!!

Great topic here from another member about getting ready for your first race: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/279198-running-tip-so-you-are-about-to-do-your-first-race

He covers everything from a full marathon to a 5k, and it was very helpful for calming my first 5k nerves last spring! Have fun with your first race - I think you'll love it!

Just relax and have fun! Do everything you've been doing and all the rest will fall into place. I can guarantee this will not be your last 5k race. The feeling of accomplishment you will get will keep you coming back for more! I finished my first race June 10th with a huge grin on my face! Good luck!

I did my first one last month without much training, I needed a starting point. There are people that walk and take 60 mins, my time was 40:10. There was so much food there donuts, breakfast bars, coffee with fatty creamers. Watch out for the over carb junk and eat a good carb/protein meal before leaving home.
    Good luck and have fun:happy:
  • Thank you everyone! All of this was very helpful! Good luck to everyone with their personal fitness journey, and thanks again!

The first time is always the hardest. Once you've done the first one you'll know what to expect and it takes the 'fear of the unknown' out of it.

I'm not much of a runner - I have run two 5Ks but that's it for running contests - but can attest that the first one is always the scariest. Here's what got me through:

    1. Headphones and music.
    2. Not "jumping out fast" in the beginning.
    3. Don't worry about keeping up with anybody.
    4. Likewise, don't worry about getting passed.

If it helps, I was scared to death the first time I raced. I was so worried I wouldn't make it without stopping/walking, or worse, that I'd come in last. Then the race started and I was just fine. Everything just fell into place. I was careful not to follow the "fast out of the gate" people, because they are either pros who I don't stand a chance of keeping up with, or over-eager casual runners who tire themselves out in the long run (no pun intended!).

    Good luck!
