"A Dose of Reality" for Breakfast this morning...

This morning my daughter had lap-band surgery. My 'ex' is bringing her back home and called to let me know things went well. She is 33 years old and was a cheerleader growing up. She now has an oxygen mask for sleeping, asthma, and a hernia that was taken care of this morning during surgery as well. She still has a cast on her wrist from a recent vacation where she fell. In the last year she has had two surgeries on a severely broken ankle.
I walked to my Dad's room in our home after I finished that call. My Dad lives with us and is a WWII Vet who will be 90 years old in January. He has always eaten well and has little health issues (thyroid meds each day and a pace maker). I was just about to knock on his door when I realized through a slight opening that he was on the floor doing his 3x/week exercises. I didn't want to interrupt his positive way of living life because I can tell him later that his granddaughter's surgery went well.
Just think about this picture... he is 90 and she is 33. Life is what you make it! Let's all take care of ourselves. Every day we have here is precious! Are you taking my Dad's road or my daughter's road?

As someone who had lapband (and millions of complications with it) and then had to have it reversed & am now doing this the RIGHT/HARD way for the first time in my life, it's far, far more rewarding this way and man I just wish I could have told the old me all of this lol. Props to your dad, he's freaking amazing in my book, can't wait to be like him, rockin' it at 90!0

I wish you daughter the best. You are only as old as you feel. In my case, I will still be a kid well into my next 30 years.0

Thanks. That is amazing about your dad! Wow,
Doing MFP has motivated me to move more. Still not into a regular workout, but am moving alot more. Getting more chores done, etc. It will happen. I do work out on my pilates machine since getting it, but its hard work and its going slow. Could only do 45 seconds of the cardio 10 days ago when I got the dang machine (you bounce off a trampoline thing while laying down, killer on the abs) am now up to 3 min. Goal is 10 min. by xmas.
Keep saying I want to walk the dog, but that hasn't happened yet (it will). One day at a time.0 -
I'd put grandpa in charge of daughter's physical therapy!0

I have had people suggest to me the LapBand/Gastric Bypass and I refuse, simply because that is a physical change, and for me, my eating habits and unhealthy lifestyle are mental. I could have my jaw wired shut to lose weight, but I know that once I fell back into the bad habits that got me here in the first place, I would be fat once again. I need to change my head in order to change my body. I am taking each day as a new day, and working towards the goal of being a healthy weight once again.0 -
WOW. Just wow. This is seriously the most motivating post I have ever read here on MFP. Thank you so much for sharing that!
The next time I don't want to do my workout I'm going to think of your awesome dad rockin' it out in his 90's!!0 -
Thanks for the reality check. I too had a bad fall last year which made me re-think my sedentary lifestyle. I decided after I was well on my way to recovery that if I had been stronger, I would have had less devastating results from my fall. I started incorporating more exercise when I went to PT . My motivation to get stronger and exercising more cut my PT (physical therapy) in half. I exercise every chance I get and I am using myfitnesspal to help me track my nutrition. I am feel so much better! I've decided to take on your father's path to a healthy lifestyle...thanks for the inspiration!!!!:flowerforyou:0
