I recently read in the current issue of Womens Health Magazin (U.S.) that on average a women can burn approx. 570 calories from standing for 8 hours a day. They said thats approx 60 calories an hour!! Thats nuts! I don't know if I belive that or not! What do all of you lovely ladies think??
** I guess I should metion that I do realize that we burn calories even by doing simple things like sitting. I am not saying that since they estimate we burn up to 60 calories an hour that I should or anyone should run off and log it in their diarys lol. I am just sharing this with an attitude of that I was shocked how Women's Health Magazine set up this article in a way that sounded like it was telling women not to worry because you do burn calories from standing. And I was shocked that it sounded like that.

you do realize that you burn calories every minute of the day, right? by sitting, sleeping, standing, brushing your teeth, reading, etc. the sheer fact that you are living and breathing means that you are burning calories in order to keep your body operating0
-
If this is true, i'll be standing up to sleep! These women must be fidgeting around, moving from one side of the room to the other to burn that amount of calories!0

570 calories in 8 hours is not a lot. with the right workout that can be burned in 1 hour...0 -

THIS!!! You burn calories sleeping - and a bit more sitting, and a bit more standing...Please don't go and eat an extra 570 calories just because you have been standing ...That should be part of your lifestyle (active, sedentary etc calculations...) The only time you won't be burning ANY calories is when your heart stops beating one day.....
And yea, a slow steady run for an hour burns just over 600 cals for me....0 -

Yes I do understand that! I'm more saying that I don't know if I really believe that you can burn a significant amount of calories by standing. My job requires me to stand for 6-8 hours a day but I don't think I'd log that I burned 300-500 calories each day from standing at my job.0 -

This is exactly my point. That just because we burn said amount of calories from standing doesn't mean we should count those calories burned, or eat them back. This was exactly my point, perhaps I stated it a little losely but however, this is what I was trying to get at lol.0 -
You should not log that....You should work out your daily calories by setting your activity to "lightly active" and then eat whatever it gives you - it will be more than someone sitting down or lying down all day, but it wont be 300-500 above your daily burn.... If you work out your BMR and divide it by 24 hours, it might surprise you to see that your average calorie burn to just stay alive and move about doing daily stuff comes to 60-75 calories per hour....
I'm old and sit on my butt behind a computer all day long at work - and I burn 64 cals an hour doing just that.....
yep, it sucks that so called "health magazines " put such convoluted info out there.....0 -
Sounds reasonable. Take an average BMR (for which you are laying down doing nothing) of say 1,500 a day = 62.5 per hour - it's basic math,0
-
A lot of these "findings" neglect to mention that your BMR needs to be deducted from whatever activity it is. That's how people get so messed up finding things to log as exercise by searching the web.0

Those calories (the ones to live) burned are accounted for in your TDEE.0 -

You would think a womans health magazine could think of a better way to burn calories that would promote health like
walking,biking,swimming,running,jumping jacks, situps, tennis etc?0 -

You aren't going to burn a significant amount over what you would have burned sitting, which is a tad more than you would have burned sleeping.
Your BMR, MFP - Settings - Tools - BMR.
Divide by 3, that's what your body would like to burn in 8 hrs, as it says there, sleeping deeply.
Probably close to 500 anyway.0 -
I recommend stopping reading Women's magazines. There are way better things to fill your brain with.0

though I think you would have to be batty to suggest standing as a way to burn calories - It could be worth mentioning in context. I work on my feet, not behind a desk, and obviously I don't stand in one place, but I do have my activity level set to take that into consideration. I don't eat 1200 calories, if I sat all day 'm sure it would be fine, but with my job I would be dying! I tried it once and actually almost passed out at work (frackin lovely) Maybe that's all the article was trying to get at?0

Thanks but no thanks, I enjoy reading them. Even if I don't always agree with what I find in them, I enjoy reading them for fun.0 -

No, I think you misunderstood me. I also like fiction- it is fun. We're on the same page, I think.0 -
This is way more fun than just standing

I would say that the article you read is probably not credible since they can't accurately divide 570 by 8.0

The point was in the bolded part - sorry, thought it was obvious.0 -
OK, so Women's Health Magazine is not trying to lose weight using MFP. They don't expect people to be recording every calorie they take in or burn. They aren't telling you to log 570 calories becasue you stood up for eight hours today. They're pointing out a phenomenon. You burn calories, a small but significant number if them, just standing vs. sitting. From an MFP point of view, yes, you should set yourself to "lightly active" for purposes of TDEE calculation if you stand all day, and not try to log extra calories for it. I say again, Women's Health is not using MFP.
Most likely this was in an article about "standing desks" or something similar. Because you do burn a few hundred more calories a day at a standing desk than at a standard sitting desk. I'm sure they're not advocating just standing for eight hours a day as your sole exercise. I'm not surprised to hear a number around 500 cals as an estimate for how many more you burn at a standing desk than a sitting desk. Not only do you burn more just by standing in the first place, you also tend to move around more. 500 calories isn't all that much, really. I burned that in a half hour tempo run today.
The info in the magazine is probably neither wrong nor misleading, it's just not relevant to how you should track your calories (other than setting your activity correctly).0
