Dress Size Estimation?

My little sister just got engaged and I think I should be able to get down to about 180lbs for the wedding next year. I was wondering if anyone can help me estimate what my dress size will be at 5'10" tall and 180lbs.

I'd really like to be able to give her a size estimate to keep in mind while she's planning what bridesmaid dresses we will be wearing.

Thanks!
Jennifer

That will be a hard one. The other day I was on a thread about women my height and we all wore different sizes at the same weight. It all depends on how your body is built and where you lose from.

Be careful - wedding dresses (including bridesmaid stuff) runs small.

I'm a 2-4 usually, and had to try on 8's when I was shopping for my dress last year. My size 10 cousin was in the 14-16 range.

Check this site out. I find it pretty helpful for this kind of thing.

on the other hand - they can also not run small. I had the bridal shop woman INSIST that I needed to size up 2 sizes because "bridal wear runs small". I got to get it taken in 2 sizes. Huge waste of money. I knew I was a size 8, and she insisted I needed a 12 anyways. (it happened to everyone in the bridal party)

worth looking at. I know my measurements. I can tell you the 8 was correct for me in the brand I was wearing. It's interesting to compare though. In those charts I can wear anything from 4-14

I agree with the above. It is impossible to estimate since we all carry our weight differently. Just check out any of those threads where people list their weight, height and dress size for proof.

Also, sizes will skew small in the bridal industry. The dress you get is sized for your biggest body part (hips, boobs, or whatever) and then tailored down. I was a size 10 when I married and had to order a size 16 dress.

You won't be ordering dresses for a while so don't sweat it until the time comes to be measured for the dress.

Best thing is to provide measurements. Clothing makers have been using "vanity sizing" for years, no no resemblence to reality. Would you rather buy a "size 10" or "size 12" ? The only thing that hasn't changed is clothing pattern sizes.
  • these 2 sites could be usefull:

    "What size am I?" http://sizes.darkgreener.com/
and a guideline (ASOS) about how to measure etc. http://www.asos.com/infopages/SizeGuide/pgesizechart.aspx

I am that size and weight right now and I have dresses that range from an 8-12, so it really depends on how it is made.

There's not way to guess without knowing your measurements. If they're using a bridal shop, they run very small (as someone else mentioned). You'll need to get measured at the shop and have some idea of where you expect to lose inches.

As a fellow tall girl, I can tell you that if she wants to go with 'traditional' long bridal shop dresses, you're going to want to order extra length! The last wedding I was in where we got one of those awful dresses, it ended up being just "THAT MUCH" too short that it bothered the hell out of me.

I say that because when I was at 180, I was a size 12 and I'm 5'8". Two inches taller I think would drop you a size (maybe two, depending on how you carry your weight).

    Good in theory but I'm 5' 6" and was also a 12 at 180 :)

Thanks for all of the replies. I guess I'll just have to wait and see... if nothing else, I can always have it taken in.

    THIS! I wear about a size 12 - my bridesmaid dress was a 22.

Bridal shops are notorious for making you order a bigger size than you actually need because when it arrives and is too big, 1. you light up with happiness, AND 2. they get to hit you with a $65 alteration. So be careful of that......:grumble:

    When I was 180, I was a size 12. (I'm 5'9")
