New Virus out BEWARE!!!!

I was on my work computer last night and a bunch of pop ups came up and i clicked out of them. All of a sudden my computer locked up on me with a message saying something about child pornography and the FBI saying I needed to pay a 200 dollar fine using Money Pak. I was like WTH I wasn't on a site like that so I called the FBI. She said its a big scam with a virus that will lock up your computer. Don't pay the money because it will not unlock it will sit there like that. So I called my internet provider he said to not pay either. Its a virus that hides in the malware and you can click anything and it activates it. You need to call best buy or staples to come out and fix it. That was crazy. Imagine me having to leave my manager a note and letting her know I wasn't on a site like that. I just wanted to let yall know and be aware of it.

Unfortunately, there has been a substantial resurgence in this type of ransomware lately. A good first step for home users would be to download a tool such as Malwarebytes, and let it do a full scan of your system. For Windows, you should be able to boot into Safe Mode with Networking, and still get to the Internet to access cleaning tools.

If this occurs at your place of employment, immediately report it, so that your company can take appropriate measures.

My computer clearly needs fixing. Only my pop-up said it could only be removed by someone not wearing a shirt. How soon can you be here?

I thought it was myfitnesspal.com. Sucks up all your productivity for the day, begins anew the following day. There's no hope for removing it, either.

For you, right away...but it's going to take a while. I'm very thorough if that's okay with you. You still have time for me?

The FBI doesn't fine people for child pornography. They are put in jail. Fines for criminal charges are also not made online. I wouldn't need to call the FBI to figure out that is a scam.

Yummy....my last IT guy looked more like a plumber, and not the kind that hunts ghosts. Ladies - we may have to battle to decide who gets him first. Grin.

You don't need to call Staples, Best Buy or anyone else for this. For a home computer, download Malwarebytes (Google it, it's free and safe). You may have to download from a clean computer onto a flash drive and install on to your infected machine, sometimes the malware program locks up the infected machine entirely, preventing access to anything.

Reboot, hit F8 during restart to get to safe mode. Once in, activate malwarebytes, let it scan and it will find the offensive program. Check the box that says remove (you may have as many as four trojans associated with this) and it will eliminate the problem. No need to pay anyone for this simple fix. If more detailed instructions are needed, Google "Fake FBI scam" or "FBI malware".

Since this is a work computer, your IT folks should already know the removal steps.
