metformin

I know everyone's reaction to metformin can be totally different, but did anyone's carb cravings go CRAZY at certain times when they take this medicine? I am on it for IR associated with PCOS, I have been trying to do lower carb/low glycemic (around 100 g of carbs or less) for 6 weeks (not perfectly, but I'm doing what I can), so I thought that whatever temporary side effects I would have would be gone by now. I am often super low energy, sore and not able to make it through my workouts.

I was eating healthily and on MFP a year before I got PCOS, and I literally NEVER craved things like chips or pizza or bread, and rarely ate them. Now, I can't stop thinking about how badly I want to demolish a bag of Sun Chips. ANyone have any experience/tips with this?

I was on metformin briefly for PCOS but started feeling really funny and getting heart palpatations. I looked into alternative medicine and starting seeing a doctor who specialized in herbs and acupuncture. With the help of herbs and a couple acupuncture treatments I got my periods back to where I now don't take anything. Since PCOS has different severity levels between each person, results may not be as fast for everyone but it's worth considering! There is also another herb called Gymnema sylvestre that is for diabetics and supposed to help control cravings for sweet things (maybe carbs as well). I took this briefly but didn't notice a huge difference and decided I had enough willpower on my own. And if you really want to research, there could be a link between gluten sensitivity and PCOS. They say you crave the things you are allergic too and studies have shown up to 85% of PCOS patients tested positive for gluten sensitivity. Sorry if all this confused you more or was more than you were looking for but this condition is so different for everyone it really is a matter of trying things to see what works for you. Best of luck!

Hmm I'm on Metformin now and the only issue I had was some dizziness and headache, which decreased day by day and evenutally was gone within a few weeks.

It's suppose to make the brain react the opposite of what you're describing... Have you mentioned to your doctor about this side effect?

I'm on metformin for Type 2 diabetes. I take 500mg twice a day. Can't say I've ever really experienced what you are describing. Wish I could be more help. Sorry. :)

I've been on MetXR since August and have the exact opposite thing happen. I used to crave pasta/chips all the time and now the only craving I really have still is for chocolate. :)
