I have starting doing the from couch to 5k and am experienceing some throbbing pain in my legs and shins after I stop running. I have just pressed on but am wondering should I just walk until I get more of my weight off or will this stop as i adjust? The bulk of my weight is in my hips and legs.

Could it be shin splints? Do you also have a good pair of running shoes?
I am not an expert by any means but I would think that if weight were an issue it would be your knees that would hurt. Makes me wonder if it is your shoes.
Can you walk but walk a bit faster like really really push it but not with the impact that jogging and running has on legs? I wish I could be of more help. I am new to running and do get shin splint pain but I hear that is pretty common.0 -
Make sure you have good shoes. Give your body time to heal in between runs. Good luck0

I agree w/ them on shoes. I always go to a specialty store that has experts on matching you up w/ a certain shoe. They always make sure you have the shoe, watch you walk in them, and some people (like me) get inserts in the shoes for different reasons. These shoes will probably be more expensive, but very worth it. If I were you I'd power walk for the next few days to give your legs time to recover. After a few days try jogging so you don't have as much impact.0

I absolutely agree! Great running shoes are the best investment you'll ever make if running is going to be in your plan. Otherwise, you'll end up injured.
Also, make sure you are dirinking plenty of water and if you're going for more than an hour, gatorade or a goo pak. Some of your cramping may be from dehydration?0 -
I agree with what the others have posted - good shoes are a must, time between runs is a must. How is your flexibility? My achilles tendons are usually tight and my massage therapist mentioned that can cause shin-splint like pain (I get mine when I walk really quickly.)
I want to get back into running, but I want to lose about 30 pounds before I do that to my knees. I finished a 5K about 5 years ago, but I didn't stick with it.

I had a very serious leg injury from running that started out the way you described your pain. It took over a year to heal. I would recommend that you invest in a GOOD pair of shoes. One tip for choosing is to try to bend or twist the shoe. The less the shoe moves the better it is. You can get custom fit shoes for about $100, which IMO is the best way to go. Take some time to let your legs heal and be sure to stretch stretch stretch. Take the program slower if you need to, but be sure you are pain free before you continue. If you are in pain alternating warm and cold compress helps a ton. I hope you can avoid the mess I was in. (Orthopedics, MRIs, orthodics etc......) GL!0

I spent two hours with a shoe specialist here. Had all sorts of knee/hip/ankle problems, but I wanted to eat more!!! The difference was night and day-once I was wearing the right shoes, the knee problems went away.
As for the shins hurting, I wouldn't give it much longer before being evaluated by a physician. Pain is an indication of a problem (I know, I know, you're supposed to hurt after a good workout) but pain that makes you want to give up is another story...0 -
thank you all for your advice. I will definitely be looking into some new shoes. I am sure that has a lot to do with it. I may just power walk for another month to get more of the weight of and get the legs betters adjusted. Maybe then i can try the program again. sometimes I have to remind myself the change will not be over night.0
