Lifting/Water Retention

I lift heavy about 3-4 times per week for four months.. I'm told that you retain water after lifting to help with muscle repairt. I try to keep my sodium low (below 1500 mg) and I drink a lot of water for everyday needs and to replenish what I lose through sweat. Will there ever be a point when the amount you retain will taper off?
