Why are we debating anything written by an OP who starts his post with the phrase "For my women"... ?
Is that the sound of knuckles dragging that I hear?

Not sure I follow what point your are trying to make with this comment? :huh:0 -
Until the zombie apocalypse. :indifferent:
This, haha!
I don't agree with any information that bashes either cardio or resistance. I prefer to balance the two.0 -
I'm sure 95% of the men out there would want to be ripped than run a mile. Running a mile is cool, but offers little real world benefits. Being ripped with muscles offers a TON of real world benefit as well as at least SOME of the cardiovascular and most if not all of the health effects.
Yeah, this.
Being ripped has literally zero real world benefit. Being strong and being fit on the other hand...
Why do so many body recomp enthusiasts believe that everyone has the same goals as them?
I would like to have a visible six-pack, but I'm not going to pretend like it would benefit me in any real way.
On the other hand, I recently learned that I can move my body over 20 miles in a morning.0 -
I love to run. It makes me happy. It helps me sleep. I get to listen to my music and think out my problems. Maybe it's not the most effective tool for sculpting a super hot body, but... whatever. I don't see why I NEED to be cut like crazy anyways. I'd rather do healthy activities I enjoy and reap the benefits from that. *shrug*0

Oh, this debate is getting old and silly. I want to lose weight, to be more fit, to be stronger, to have more endurance, so I can do all sorts of things.
* I love lifting heavy because I do like getting stronger so I can do more and the way it is helping shape my body.
* I also love riding my bike for a century (or 20, 40, 60 miles, whatever). Why? Because it's hella fun! And no one can convince me that going uphills isn't strengthening those muscles either. I think lifting weights compliments and improves my cycling.
* I don't love running yet but I'm still out there doing it because I do want to be able to run if I need to in an emergency situation or just because it feels good. I would love to be walking on the beach and break out into a run because it feels joyous. I'm getting there. I do think lifting weights compliments and improves my running, too.
* I love hiking for hours, up and down steep hills, carrying a pack without it hurting or feeling like it's weighing me down. And you need both strength and cardio fitness to do this so, yeah, cardio has some real world applications, OP. And, yeah, lifting helps with this, too.
* I love HIIT. Sometimes I do a longer 30-minute session with HIIT on an elliptical or treadmill. Sometimes, I just do it a few times as part of a warm-up before lifting. Sometimes I do it in a planned/timed way at the track doing sprints and/or stairs on the bleachers. Sometimes I do it fartlek-style, just random, while out running. It's all good.
* I also love to do an occasional cardio-kickboxing class, or zumba, or spinning, and you can't keep me away from my weekly bootcamp class.
The point is, fitness is achieved a number of different ways. I get bored with too much routine so I am constantly doing different things. If I am doing a lot of cardio (running, cycling, hiking, HIIT), I might not make it to the gym for a week or two to do any heavy lifting. But then I might have a week or two where I do mostly heavy lifting with just a bit of cardio. I never lose any real strength and can usually jump right back into the weight/reps I was previously doing even after a couple weeks off from the gym. The same with jumping back into cardio.
As long as you're doing something, it's all good. And I enjoy mixing it up because it's more fun that way. All this from a still overweight, but working on it, post-menopausal woman who was a couch potato for about 20 years until summer of 2011. Oh, well...to each their own.

Thank you! Thought I was the only one who caught that. As soon as someone on here refers to 'their women', they lose all credibility they might have had. They also seem to always be short, too. Whats up with that? Easier for the knuckles to reach the ground?0 -
my gym is weird. there's also a bunch of emaciated looking men folk who live on cardio machines
  :laugh:0 -
I LOVE cardio. I do the hill intervals on the treadmill for an hour each day and lost 14 lbs. I managed to completely reshape my *kitten* and all the celluilite is gone from there (plus from my legs) I don't do it to punish myself, I do it b/c I love it. I also like snowshoeing, riding my bike, kayaking, and some hiking. I also do strength training about 3x/week but I would NEVER give up my cardio. I would be too bored with just weights and resistance bands. different strokes for different folks. weight loss is all about finding the activity you love and sticking with it.0

You know, plenty of men only engage in cardio-only exercise, too. I know guys who only exercise is running or racquetball or cycling.
Just sayin'
You are correct!
Or guys who only do resistance...sure you are ripped but can you run a mile? Lol

I'm a runner and couldn't give a sun-dried dingleberry about being ''ripped'...5%ers for life.0 -
Pompous much??? cardio is very important for those wishing to improve heart health. The key, as with everything in life, is balance. I say do both and most importantly do exercise that you enjoy.0

This has been entertaining reading. We all know what works best for ourselves depending on where we are in our weight loss or health and well being journey. And regardless of what other people preach, we will continue doing what works. I have learned many things in the process of bettering my health. The main one being to "take everything with a grain of salt" and carry on doing what is giving me the results I need. Later on I will have to reassess what exercise I do to get what I want. No there yet so no probs huh.       :laugh:0

And there was me, thinking that pushing myself to get off the couch in the evening and do an hour belly dancing or run for 30mins was doing me some good, that it was aiding my weight loss and setting me up for the future.
But hey, why dont i just sit my bordering on morbidly obese *kitten* back on the couch because 'cardio is useless'
yeah sounds like a GREAT idea.
I really dont think people who write this sort of crap on forums like this realise just the impact that they have on the doubting beginner, or the person who has just got the motivation to get up and go despite all the odds.
Seriously, take a long hard look in the mirror and think about all the people you have possibly demotivated with this one sided negative crap.0 -
If a man can't run a mile they are not in shape or healthy no matter how many muscles they have..in my opinion.0
-
Why do people always feel the need to diss cardio? Cardio is excellent for improving your heart and lungs. My family has a history of heart disease. Lifting weights isn't really working ye olde heart to the fullest. Lifting weights is good in its own right, but it's not the only way. Plus, cardio does burn quite a few calories, and my body has looked way better since I started running.0

And your thinly veiled insults do? Okay, whatever.
Don't be pompous. I was asking a question because I honestly don't know why you would take exception to what I wrote.
The article was directed toward women, written by a woman. Is that hard for YOU to comprehend?
While I understand there are men who clearly fit into the same categories as outlined in the article, I think you are spending too much time over-analyzing my wording. Or perhaps you are guilty of it yourself?? That's probably the real issue.0 -

You're on a loser there sunshine. She's an academic so I'd imagine the comprehension is just fine, and a lifter who enjoys cardio also. Just so happens she's not one for meat heads though, I think that's the real issue here.0 -
Well...I love my zumba and hiphop classes and I go to have fun...I like the feeling it gives me and I love dancing...I'm not going to stop because people say it's not the best way to burn fat. But I guess I'm not really expecting it to do much for me other than burn some calories.
Exactly! I do cardio because it lifts my mood. It's so refreshing to go for a run on a nice day, or even just to get the rush of endorphins after doing the elliptical while watching my favorite show on TV! It's great to incorporate strength training into a routine, but those who think cardio is pointless should keep in mind that many people do it just because it's fun!0 -

I can't speak for her, but this is what I interpret from her post:
1. OP believes all women belong to and should listen to him.
2. Only women do cardio.
3. Women do not use any type of strength training workout.
By saying "my women", you're coming across as demeaning and Neanderthalic (who are stereotyped as dragging their knuckles because they barely stood upright).0 -

It's a "I have binders of women" kind of statement. I'm sure you didn't mean that we're all YOURS, but that's how it comes off.0 -
If I can defend the OP, I'm sure he refers to the number of 'online' females he owns when he says ' my women'. Many men who lack female company in the ''off line '' world amass multiple females in their 'virtual' life..
If this is not the case, then we shouldn't tolerate people traffickers on MFP forums.0 -

I have seen this kind. They flirt with all the women on their friends lists, who are mostly cougars and desperate housewives that respond very eagerly to male attention. Not saying the OP is one of these, but there are plenty of those kinds of dudes hanging around the forums! Kind of disturbing and hilarious at the same time.0 -
Funny, I took "my women" as meaning the women he is MFP friends with.0

I took '' my women'' to mean a declaration of some sort of ownership... like bubble gum cards, ticket stubs etc.0 -
My exercise routine has always been cardio heavy, but mostly because I like music, dance and endorphins. Turbokick and spin classes are my current loves. I include strength and resistance training for aesthetic purposes.0
