Alright def agree they do the body good, but I have a question.
Should I begin to use them when I'm down to my goal weight and then tone up or should i start using it now?

I use protein now, while I'm losing, because I know my muscles need them.

I don't use them. I do have a question. Do they tastes as bad as I heard? Are they really good for you? I get enough protein to top my %. Should I use them?

Keep your protein intake high when you are losing weight. Combining that with lifting can keep the muscle loss to a minimum when at a calorie deficit.

There isn't anything magical about protein shakes, but they are convenient.

I've just started drinking one shake per day, when I get home from the gym. I'm alternating using Pure Protein Frosty Chocolate flavor and Cookies & Creme each day...one scoop with a cup of Silk Unsweetened Almond Mlik. They both taste very good.

I drink a protein shake most mornings....I have a terrible time eating breakfast anyways, and this is a great way for me to get some nutrition in. You always need protein.

Are you not working out now? If you're not, I don't understand why you would wait till you are at goal. You'll get to goal faster working out.

I'd start using them now. I've found the people at GNC to be really helpful and knowledgable. I was in there yesterday and he helped me choose the right one for my workout, diet, and goals.

^^ This. Me too! I make one at night so it's ready in the morning. Adding 1Tbs. of chia seed gives it great texture, adds a lot of healthy omegas, makes it more filling, and helps with craving throughout the day.

Protein shakes are only a means to reach your protein target. Use them at any point when you need to supplement.

    Use them now!

To the person who asked about taste, they taste fine but who cares? Not everything you put in your mouth is going to taste like Heaven. Get over it, drink your protein shake and suck it up for 20 seconds. That's it. Otherwise, get some almond, soya or skimmed milk, some cocoa, some sweetener, a banana, some peanut butter or whatever and make it into a tasty meal replacement. It isn't that hard, your attitude is what makes it hard.

Are high protein diets good for someone attempting to lose fat and/or gain lean body mass?

    Yes.

The word “protein” derives from the Greek “prota”, and before you think I am starting to sound like the father in “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” this has relevance as prota means OF PRIMARY IMPORTANCE. Without adequate protein cosmetic issues such as losing 1 stone (with attendant impossible to shift localised fat deposits) pale into comparison as too many times I have seen (almost always women) end up with depressed thyroids that have a knock on effect on their estrogen/progesterone hormonal axis (and consequently impair fertility, vitality, skin tone etc…the negative list can run into the dozens).

If this isn’t enough for you lets also take note that protein-

maintains muscle mass whilst dieting. Not important for a woman you may think, but oh yes it is! 1lb of muscle equals an additional 50calories a day onto your metabolism. If you lose 5 lbs of muscle with excessive dieting (a very common error) your metabolism will slow down by 250cals a day – which is a massive 1750 calories a week!
The consumption of carbohydrates and fats actually burn up less than 5% of the ingested calories in order to properly digest them. If you eat protein a whopping 30% of the calories you consume are burned up simply digesting the food!

    Pretty compelling stuff I think.

I have a wonderful shake (Body By ViSalus), twice a day. It helps you burn fat AND build lean muscle. I'm using it to help me get to my goal weight.

How exactly does it do this?

Oh, and the statement about burning fat and building lean muscle - total cr*p btw.

    Just to clarify:

Adequate levels of protein, in combination with a good workout program help burn fat and/or gain muscle. Drinking a brand of protein shake doesn't do this on its own. If it did, everyone would buy protein shakes and not workout.

Drink a shake whenever you need to reach your protein goals. No real need to use them if you are getting enough protein from diet alone.
