binge days-vicious cycle

I am so happy I decided to change my life and finally slowly by slowly I was able to lose 70 pounds in a course of almost 2 years. I still have a goal of loosing 15 pounds, but I have been very bad by having binge days almost every weekend! :( With that being said, I do not lose weight, I gain back and forth 5 pounds. Any tips so I can get back on track and stop this vicious cycle???

    My tips:
    - Keep your kitchen clear of foods that tend to trigger binges
    - try putting sticky notes in your cupboards
    - log everything, even if you are wayyy over - especially if you are way over - its a good wake up call
    - if you feel like you are about to eat something you feel you shouldn't - try brushing your teeth or chewing gum instead
    - drink lots of water
    - remind yourself that you can and will achieve your goals
    - if you feel like you are bingeing because you are feeling too restricted in your diet,
try slightly increasing your calorie goal on the weekends
    - remind yourself that the weight you put-on on the weekend, you are going to have to work that much harder during
the week to lose weight in the long run
    - give yourself a hug and forgive yourself, guilt doesn't get you anywhere, but change does:)
  • Thank you, very helpful!! :-)

Read 'eating less'- how to avoid overeating'. It REALLY worked for me. You can download it as an audio book from Amazon.
  • Ok. Thank you so much!
  • Have you tried writing down how you're feeling at the time of your binge and the events leading up to it? I f you can spot patterns you can maybe stop potential triggers before they happens. If it's a habit (that's not quite the word I'm looking for, I mean, if it's triggered at a specific time) maybe try being out of the house at that time? Or if binging is becoming a 'reward' for eating well throughout the week, perhaps decide 'Just for this weekend, I'm not going to binge, I'm going to have an at-home spa say/movie day/meet someone for a coffee/whatever works for you'. and see if that works>

I don't know, I know it's really tough, but if you can figure out what's triggering these binges, it's the first step to stopping!
  • thank you...it usually starts with like my emotions: sad, happy, excited, disappointed, "it's the weekend who cares" and then the regret comes, today is Saturday and I'm doing great!! I'm mentally talking to myself and reminding myself why I started to lose weight in the first place. It's hard too because I'm the only one at home who's on a weight loss journey, but I am strong and I can do this!!!

Often time we binge because we are not getting enough food. In order to get enough food to avoid binging, and not go over your calories, it's best to try and cram as many fruits and vegetables in your day as possible.

I find adjusting MFP desired loss to only half pound a week gives me more calories and helps prevent binges. Obviously weightloss will be slower but more consistent. DEFINITELY try that book though.

I have a similar issue. I used to eat whole bags of chips in a day. I don't want to feel like I can't have a treat, so I buy 100 calorie bags of cool ranch doritos. That way, when I am craving chips I can get a taste of what I want without eating too many calories. I also try to drink a whole bottle of water before snacking so I start feeling full before even eating anything. It also helps to log all the food you eat, even if you are way over. I log on my iphone as I eat because once I'm over I start to feel really guilty and tend to stop or at least slow down.

    Good luck!

This works for me too. Logging mid-binge can stop you. Log BEFORE you eat may stop you eating it.
  • What is your intake currently? Did you eliminate any foods from your diet or try to? Binging usually occurs from a combination of deprivation and emotions. Make sure your diet is in check and since you don't have long to go, maybe reduce your calorie deficit. As for the emotions (if that's the case), try to keep yourself occupied. Go for a walk, exercise, watch a movie, etc. Good luck!

    Hi,

I actually just came on these forums cause I am having the same problem as you! It's no where near your achievement, but from June to now I've lost around a stone - 14lbs and very nearly reached GW1 of 147lbs. But since I hit 148lbs I seem to be in a similar cycle - I binge at weekends, then spend the week losing what I've put on.

Just for example this weekend - since Friday night I have eaten more calories (probably double!) than I ate the whole week up to then.

I know I should log, but its so embarrassing. All this advice has really helped me too so thanks guys!

Maybe we could be mfp friends and try motivate each other through the weekends??

I ate 800 cals of chocolate yesterday! For me it was a combination of not enough sleep the night before, pushing myself at body pump which then lead to me being very tired and grumpy. Food felt like a good idea - at the time..

This here - the embarassment of what anyone who looks at my diary would think, has stopped me having lollies and chocolate countless times!!
  • Hi Carly! My will power is turned on!!! lol We can do this! I figured one of the reasons why I am binge eating on the weekends and that is because I don't look forward to go my body combat(kickboxing) class, so it's motivating me, but I've decided to do one activity either Saturday or Sunday that's different, like running or something. How's your weekend going so far???

I just read a book that addresses binge eating, particularly. "Food Addiction (revised)" by Kay Sheppard. It is especially helpful if you tend to binge on the same kinds of food.
