The wonders of Magnesium

After about 3 years of struggling with Fibromyalgia, the meds, doctors, pain, fatigue, coming very close to losing my job...you get the picture, I got pregnant with my now 2 year old. Bad news was, I could no longer take the meds that were making this disfunction at least bearable. 3 months into the pregnancy, I told the doctor I wasn't sleeping...I felt I could deal with the pain on it's own, but the lack of sleep was rediculous. He recommended that I take 1000 mg of Magnesium before bedtime every night. Magnesium, he explained, does for your muscles what Melatonin does for your mind...helps them relax. The amazing thing was, after 3 days, my Fibro symptoms started fading away. Even after having my son, I have never started back on the meds, or went back to the dr. for my fibro. I have shared this with people with Arthritis, restless leg syndrome, general aches and pains, and have heard the same thing from each, Magnesium seriously helped with these symptoms! If you research Magnesium, you find that it helps with so many different problems. A friend of mine divided her doseage out over the course of the day...she said that she would wake up in the middle of the night because of it, however, I have never had that problem. Just figured I would share this becuase it helped me so much...and of course, my Rhumetologist NEVER suggested it.

    I have a dire need for magnesium due to severe muscle spasms so I can verify that it is a majorly under utilized supplement!

    Cool! Maybe that's why soaking in Epsom salts is so great when I'm achy and sore. The magnesium in the salts is absorbed through the skin. Glad you've recovered! :drinker:

    I doesn't work for everyone though. My husband has restless leg syndrome and it didn't touch it unfortunately. Wish it had of. The dopa pills he is now on only work half the time. Miserable disease to have.

    Please do not take a supplement without a doctor's approval folks. It is possible to OD on magnesium via supplements just like it's possible to OD on potassium via supplements. These supplements can cause very serious health problems and can interfere with prescription medications, so make sure you clear taking them with your doctor first.

    Hypermagnesemia is an electrolyte disturbance in which there is an abnormally elevated level of magnesium in the blood.[1] Usually this results in excess of magnesium in the body.

    Hypermagnesemia occurs rarely because the kidney is very effective in excreting excess magnesium. It usually develops only in people with kidney failure who are given magnesium salts or who take drugs that contain magnesium (e.g. some antacids and laxatives). It is usually concurrent with hypocalcemia and/or hyperkalemia.

    I'm sure there are dangers in taking too much of any vitamin or mineral, and you should probably consult a Dr., but mine was an OB and I was pregnant at the time, and they are very careful when you are pregnant as to what may harm you or the baby.

    It's actually pretty rare from what I read. I know a friend was told by her doctor to take between 400-500 mg per day for migraines. That's what I take (and what I read was the dose in a medical study done by either the air force or army - can't remember - have to hunt for that one). Anyway, it works really well for keeping migraines away. I actually researched it and discovered that many water softener systems remove Magnesium from the water you drink in your homes so basically, it's a common deficiency to have which means taking it can be a good idea. I had migraines and tinnitus and it helped me quite a bit and reduced the noise levels so my hearing is now not so overshadowed by hissing sounds.

    That's great news that you found what helped you! One of my favourite ways to get magnesium is through an epsom salt bath, especially now that the weather has turned cold!

    I discovered this a few years ago as well and have shared it with everyone I know! It helped so much with anxiety, heart palpitations, muscle pain, and severe muscle spasms related to nerve damage from a disk injury. Oral supplementation helps me some; applied to the skin helps me even more, either through magnesium chloride sprays or epsom salts.

    I have fibro and restless leg syndrome. My specialist has me taking magnesium malate twice a day. It has helped me a lot!

    Ironically, I have to add it to my aquariums. Our water softener tank strips it from the water so my fish need it to stay healthy. Basically, I re-add it and calcium which is also stripped from the water through the system. Basically, it removes all metals. That's the main reason I take supplements.

    hmm I should ask my Rheumy about that. I'm not sure if it will help me the same way because my problem is due to a crazy immune system buutt it's worth a try!

    Thank you Monica for posting this. I would love to find anything to help my migraines. I use to get them 2-3 times a week. When
    I exercise a lot (2-3 hours of walking min.) then I don't get them. When I don't, they come back. :sad:
