I have been looking for some ways to get my protein up since I've been taken off dairy, eggs and soy. I'm not a big meat eater ( I eat chicken a few times a week and seafood once a week) so I started looking into protein/health/supplement bars as a way to get my protein up.
I'm also not allowed gluten or almonds so I had to watch for that.
Hopefully this will interest some of you out there who also have food intolerances or even those who are vegan but also soy free.
Here are reviews of the 4 Vegan, Soy free, Gluten free, Almond free bars I tried.
LARABAR - Peanut Butter - 48g bar
Protein: 7g Cals: 220 Fat: 12g Carb: 23g Sugar: 18g Fiber: 4g
The taste was….good. The texture I did not care for. The good thing about Larabars is there are very few ingredients, no chemicals or things you can't pronounce. It makes you feel very safe eating it. This bar contains dates, peanuts, and sea salt. My issue is, the dates are what form the bar (a kind of paste that's pressed into a bar shape, reminds me of fruit leather) and it's just way to sweet for my liking.
NuGO Free: Gluten Free Dark Chocolate Crunch - 45g bar
Protein: 9g Cals: 170 Fat: 3g Carbs: 28g Sugar: 11g Fiber: 4g
It tastes like a rice crispy square that's gone a little stale that was then smothered in dark chocolate. Now, I'm not saying that's an ENTIRELY bad thing, but it made my jaw a little sore trying to chew it and it didn't really keep me feeling full long.
Macrobar - Peanut Protein - 57g bar
Protein: 13g Cals: 230 Fat: 8g Carbs: 35g Sugar: 23g Fiber: 1g
This one was delicious. The texture was really good, not overly soft, not overly chewy. Very simple ingredients, Brown rice syrup, peanut butter, brown rice protein powder, and puffed brown rice (all organic). I wish it had a bit more fiber, but I can't be too picky. It is quite a bit bigger than the other bars and is very filling. At almost the same calories as the Larabar it packs almost twice as much protein.
Vega Sport - Chocolate Coconut - 60g bar
Protein: 15g Cals: 240 Fat: 7g Carbs: 30g Sugar: 19g Fiber:3g
By far the best tasting. And with 20 more calories than the Larabar, over twice the protein. This one has a combination of brown rice protein as well as pea protein. The coconut flavour is not overpowering, and the shredded coconut gives it a really good flavour. The dark chocolate coating isn't overly bitter and is just the right amount for the bar (not too chocolatey). This was the perfect snack after my workout today.
All in all, my favourite (which I definitely plan to purchase again) is the Vega Sport Chocolate Coconut protein bar.

I'm going to have to try some of those. I don't have any intolerances but I'm always looking for better protein and I'm trying (despite my husband's best efforts) to stay away from 'franken-food"0

Which country are you in? I have never seen any of those brands in Australia and I'm constantly on the look out for new things that I CAN actually eat!0

I'm in Canada it doesnt look like any of them are currently available in Austrailia.0

I highly suggest the Vega one. I got them at Natures Fare, except the Larabar was from IGA0 -

Bummer... I seriously think I need to move to the US/Canada... They have a much better range of foods over there for people with allergies!!!0 -
