Low Carb Diet and Breastfeeding?

So the husband really really wants to do the very low carb diet (i.e Atkins) but since I'm breastfeeding I'm nervous about going all out with the diet and it effecting my milk supply. So we decided to slowly lower our carb intake while we get rid of all the carbs we have left in the house until I hit a carb amount thats right for me and my baby. I don't really have a plan we are just sort of playing it by ear.I set my carb % on here to 25% and I'm trying to stay at or below that. Anyone tried the low carb diet while breastfeeding?

I would recommend talking to one of the Breast Feeding Specialists, I can't remember what they're called.0

Honestly not a subject I know much about but from the looks of your profile ticker you have very little to lose. At big change in diet during breastfeeding seems a bit unnecessary. I'd speak to your Doctor first and other breastfeeding Moms but honestly you look great:flowerforyou:0

it can decrease your supply a lot!0

I think it's a bad idea, talk to a health professional.0

I wouldn't have thought putting your body into ketosis while breastfeeding is a good idea.0

For everyone saying it is a bad idea, they are quite wrong. Eating proteins, fats and a lot of vegetables and some fruits will give you the most nutrient dense foods to feed your baby.
Breast milk is composed of primarily saturated fats for proper brain function and development. I know many mothers that live this lifestyle and have some of the healthiest babies that don't get sick and have outstanding immune systems.
Grains and such are not that nutrient dense and simply put we don't NEED them.
Ketosis is not dangerous and allows our bodies to be in a fat burning state, instead of being a sugar burner.0 -
Thanks for the advice. I will talk to my doctor about it. My baby is about six months old now so shes starting to eat more solid foods and less breastmilk anyways. I think I will just lower my carbs slowly bit by bit and play it by ear. I found a few websites that recommend starting low carb diets at the pre-maintenance or maintenance stages. I think Im going to aim for 60-90 grams of net carbs a day but Ill see what the doctor says.0
