Its a start! Finally!

In my earlier years, when I was really internally motivated, I could lose weight quite easily. In my 30'sand 40's, I jogged about 40 miles every week, ran in marathons, and had no weight issues whatsoever. For the past 15 years, the problem for me has been that, now that I am an old man and my bum knee prevents me from jogging, I just can't find the motivation to start and stick to a diet and exercise regimen. If I start a diet in the morning,I never make it past noon and the local donut shop.
Earlier this week I listened to my son and son-in-law discussing their exercises and diets (both look great) and realized that I could still lose weight if I really wanted to, and so I downloaded myfitnesspal to my iPod. It has helped me get past the first three days of dieting successfully, and to lose 3 pounds in the process. Yea, I know, that isn't much yet, but at least it is finally a start! I am hoping that sharing my experiences on this site will help keep me motivated.

Hi there and welcome to a great site. Come here for motivation, for support or just to vent your frustration. we are all here for a common goal and that is to find the happy balance between healthy living, acceptable weight and enjoying life.
I have to shout out too. 3lbs is nothing to be easily dismissed. That is a great loss... Well done.0 -
Thank you! That is exactly the kind of support that will keep me motivated. All the best to you too in your weight loss activities.0

you have come to the right place to help you in your life changing journey. None of us will tell you it will be easy but you will have a lot of support here. 3 pounds in 3 days is good but make sure you are not starving yourself. Get your calories in and find something you can do with the bum knee. I have leg problems and do low impact areobics and speed walking.
Good Luck0 -
wow! 3 lbs. in 3 days is GREAT!
I just turned 55 yesterday and I started MFP 25 days ago. I felt just like you before I joined. But I've lost 11 lbs!
Good for you! Good for US!0 -
Thanks for the kind words, Tricia. So many pitfalls to avoid! My biggest will come when I hit that plateau and stop losing weight for awhile. That is when I tend to give up and go back to my old ways.
I'm planning to get a knee replacement this summer. Been putting it off for too many years. I want to get my weight down before the surgery to make my recovery easier. Who knows--I might even be able to start jogging again someday. Wow, would that be great.0 -
The plateau is the worst but I will tell you if you hit one then change what you are doing. That is what I had to do when I hit my first one. I suggest a heartrate monitor and calorie counter. You can research them online and there is a post going right now talking about them.0

Thanks! Looks like you are doing well too! Keep it up.0
