it can get confusing to eat your recommended allotment of fruit (2-4) and veggies (3-5) when the label lists a serving as less or more than the recommended portion size or when there is no label. do you know your portion sizes?

Asparagus....................6 spears, cooked or canned
Baby carrots.................10 carrots (serving size listed on the bag is 4 carrots)
Brussels sprouts........4 medium sprouts
Celery............................1 medium stalk
Corn...............................1/2 cup kernels or 1 ear
Leafy greens................1 cup
Mushrooms..................1/2 cup chopped or 6 medium
Okra................................8 pods
Radishes......................10 radishes
Snow peas...................10 pods

Avocado........................1/2 medium
Apricots.........................3 medium
Cherries........................20
Dates.............................6
Honeydew melon........1/2 cup
Kiwi................................2 medium
Mango/papaya.............1/2 medium
Passion fruit.................4 medium
Strawberries.................5 medium/4 large

I have portion distortion with ALL foods! Yesterday I weighed out 100g of cooked ground sirloin and couldnt believe how small the serving was! I think Ive always been better guesstimating with fruits and veggies than with meats/proteins.
  • wow that helps a lot :)

you're welcome! i hope it helps! it made me realize that i need 2.5 'servings' of baby carrots to get in ONE recommended veggie serving. or if i follow a lettuce/spinach bag 'serving' of 3 cups that is actually THREE recommended veggie servings. i also didn't realize that i need to eat TWO kiwi for one recommended fruit serving. :)
