In a jogging rut?

Does anyone ever have jogging ruts? by that I mean you love jogging.... but sometimes you go through a phase where you just dont love it.
I go through these on occasion and i'm in one right now. I'm just wondering if im the only one or not. Sometimes i wanna get out and run 4 miles, sometimes by half a mile i wanna quit. I never allow under 1 mile - just for my own pure personal reasons. I figure at some point i'll get out of the phase - and I do but when in that phase i just make sure i run a mile to avoid losing stamina down the road. It's usually just a week or two that i go through these ruts then i am fine again....
when i'm in a rut - i find other cardio exercises such as dancing or the elliptical as supplements.

Does anyone else have this issue?? What do you do? how long are your ruts that you go through? how many miles do you typically enjoy jogging?

Could you do a programme. I've started a 10k programme from Runkeeper which has intervals. I've also heard about the zombie app that some people enjoy.

    What is the program exactly?

Sorry. Didn't explain. I finished couch 25k and then started to increase my distance. The programme is part of runkeeper and will build me up to do 10k. There are workouts for 61 sessions each one is different and consists of periods of slow running interspersed with faster runs. You can google programmes to work towards other distances too.

    Yes - all the time.

I'm actually in one right now. Just not feelin it. It's gotten colder here (Massachusetts) though so I'm still pushing. I have to be out in the morning to take the dog out, and when it's cold like this I'd rather run and be warm than walk and freeze.

Taking that time to do something else (like you're doing) is actually a great way to make sure your body gets a little cross training :)

Do you run races? If I'm in a rut, I find signing up for a new race motivational.... a new distance, trail vs. street, etc. I also try to run differently every day (hills, intervals, shorter fast run, longer slow run).

I was going to suggest this. It always gets me out of a running rut.

Buy some some new running gear. Like a new hydration pack, nice pair running gloves, roadid.com has some neat ID straps and some nice reflective ankle bands and some really nice small bright flashing led lights, new running shoes, shirts, shorts, pants. The list goes on! : )

I'm broke this ^^ Is not an option right now, but it does help.

Signing up for running events is always a motivator. I'm signed up for the Color Run but that's in January.

My ruts usually last a week or two, so i just push through them as much as i can until i'm motivated again. I'm really in the mood to run today BUT ant because I have to sit here waiting on stupid FEDEX to get here so i can sign for a package and be out and on my way. Unfortunately i also have my 3 year old son here and the gym child center closes between 2 and 4pm so it looks like no running for me today unless its this evening which i doubt ill get to.
im pretty bummed to be sitting here wasting great running time on a stupid package that isnt even for me!

I'm in one right now :-/ The last time I ran, it was 2 weeks ago and 6 miles. Since then, I've had TOM issues, been sick, plus I have 2 massive blisters on each foot. I think it's ok to take a break here and there (probably NOT 2 weeks like I've done, even though I've exercised in other ways), and I think it's cyclical to love something and then not be quite so excited about it. I know that I, for one, need to change up my running music and my route, and that will help a whole bunch. Good luck!

Do I ever get into ruts! It's totally normal! (It better be LOL)

I am training under the direction of a coach, where he prescribes workouts for me based on our discussion of my goals and fitness level. The workouts are TOUGH - especially the intervals and tempos. I need to focus while I do those, or I won't be able to meet the times. This week has been BRUTAL. I have had no motivation to do them, and kept losing focus. I just have been feeling so tired, feeling drained, sick of the training routine, you name it.

However, I know that this is temporary, and that this too shall pass. The way I handle it is to just pull back a little bit on the effort, and not beat myself up when I don't meet my times (eg. I had to run 6x400 in 1:43 and I could only do 1:48). Stuff like that. Unfortunately, doing another activity is not an option for me b/c my training is pretty structured. But frankly, I don't want to do anything else but run anyway. I just sometimes don't want to "train!" I just want to go out for an easy run! So I let myself do that and I tell my coach how I'm feeling.
