calculating calories burned

Do I trust MFP or the machine I am using? My elliptical said 450 burned while MFP logged 770? Seems high to me.

To be honest, probably not either =/

The closest you can do is get a heart rate monitor with a strap. One of the best investments I've made (mine was a Polar at around $60)

My elliptical machine at home says a I burn TWICE as many as i really do!

Hope you find a good balance!

  • I second that, HR monitor all the way. When I got the heart rate monitor (mine was the cheap one from Walmart, works fine, $40) I found out that MFP and the machine at the gym were kinda close but not right. It could be off by as much as 100 calories. I figured that in a week if I used MFP's numbers and ate some of those calories back, that I didn't actually burn by the way, I wasn't doing myself any favors.

Thanks for the responses. I will either replace my heart rate monitor battery or put a new one on my christmas list.
