I have very thick hair and it gets tangly SO easily. And it gets bad tangles, the ones that take minutes to comb out! I like my thick hair, but it's so hard to manage with all the tangles. I literally have to spend at least 10 minutes everyday just combing my hair for it to look decent. :grumble:
So, do you have thick hair? How do you manage it? Any tips/advice?

do you condition your hair?
and does your hair get tangled during the day or when you sleep?
i have very thick hair but dont have too much of a problem unless i toss and turn all night0 -
I use Herbal Essences Tousle Me Softly. I have extremely thick curly hair and it always tangles and knots but I found using these shampoos and conditioners helped it a little. I also find the tangles are less if I plait my hair before bed.
You can also try smoothing serums to see if that helps bushing it in the morning0 -
I have curls and my hair is thick. It tangles up pretty bad. People always say my curls are cute but they probably don't realize how knotty it is. On a first date a guy once tried to run his fingers through my hair and his digits got stuck halfway through. That was attractive. I condition it well, dont use cheap products, and always put it up to sleep (otherwise it would be a matted disaster by morning.) If I go a full day without combing my hair the curls at the nape of my neck start to form dreadlocks. Sexy.0

I have very thick hair with S shaped curls that tangles easily.
I use John Frieda Brilliant Brunette shampoo and conditioner.
In shower, I flip head over and gently finger comb through after I shampoo and conditioner.
From here, I'll take my mega wide tooth comb and start to comb the ends making sure not to snag.
This particular brand of shampoo and conditioner melts all of my worst tangles and allows me to comb through them like butter.
For sleeping, I blot my hair semi dry, apply a very small dallop of Paul Mitchel Super Skinny serum, and braid into pigtails to keep it from tangling in the night.
Morning time, I have tangle free shiny curls that are super soft and can even be run through by male suitors if I should so please!0 -
I know you're not *supposed* to do this, but when my hair gets really tangled from the thickness and curliness - I brush it when its wet... after I shampoo but before I condition. You're only supposed to comb it or something like that but it hurts a lot less if I brush it while in the shower and its easier to get things out. Detangler is good too...I don't really have a preference. I don't brush it everyday (that sounds weird but I don't) I brush the curls out and look ridic lol if I do that and I can't wash it everyday either cause its not good for my hair... so I brush it when I wash my hair.0

Trader Joe's Nourish Spa conditioner works for me.0

Maybe give your ends a proper trim as well? I find that when my ends are split my hair tangles easier.0

I have thick curly hair and what I do is comb through in the shower when the conditioner is on my head.
It gets the knots out so that when I'm styling it after, I don't have the hassle of tangles and knots.0 -
I use Infusium:

They have a large variety. At first, used It for broken hair... took the full treatment... works miracles! Get your hair very soft and manageable.0 -
DevaCurl products have been a lifesaver for me.0

I had the same issue but with my hair cut shorter not so bad, however i still need to brush my hair in the shower with conditioner in it. Otherwise i am in trouble. I use to get my sister to help me growing up cause it use to get so bad! Good hair cut with layers and don't forget thinning it out helps (well it helped me)0

Hum.... brush your hair in the shower/when are too wet will damage them... hairstylist trick..... you are supposed to comb them with a detangle comb, dry them a bit without brush and when the most of the water is pretty much out of your hair, then you use the brush...
Hair are fragile when wet.. mostly hot water...0 -
i have very thick but course hair, it never tangles, but i do use fructicis garnier anti frizz which does make it easier to brush out when its wet. and i use A LOT of contioner also the fructis garnier ( sorry i know thats not the actual spelling lol )0

My hair isn't as thick as it use to be, but it's LONG. I be sure to condition it and comb it right out of the shower. I am looking into finding Infusium because my dad use to use it on my hair as a kid. I don't know if they still make it. I may just have to find any leave in conditioner that will help keep it detangled.
There's also a Paul Mitchell product that I use to do that helps keep it detangled longer throughout the day. I forgot what it was called though0 -
I feel your pain. Came up with a remedy though.0

A couple of things, first I thin it out every couple of months. Second, I use lots of conditioner and make sure the conditioner is worked through really well. Also, there are some detangling sprays out there (check the children's shampoo area) that work really well. Spray the tangle and then comb it out.
another thing that I have found that helps is to use a flat iron to straighten my hair. That makes a world of difference.0 -
I like Bumble and Bumble Prep. It smells great too!0

I have hair down to my waist and it's wavy/ curly/ unruly and I use this it really works
ETA I found it at Bed Bath & Beyond and you don't need extra hair product to get the job done0 -
Always brush your hair before getting in the shower to wash it.. Always follow up by combing thru your conditioner with a wide tooth comb in the shower..... (Joico reconstructor is a good one)
Then spray on leave in conditioner (Its a 10 is good or aussie is good) Then.... comb that thru...
But I find if you brush your hair first before getting it wet in the shower to wash it, and combing thru your conditioner while your in there.. That seems to help mine... I've also had my cosmetology license since 19850 -
Paul Mitchell-Super Skinny.. cant live without it0

I have hair (almost) down to my hips and it's ridiculous thick. I used to HATE it, but now I love it. When I wash my hair, I use tons of conditioner (I haven't really found a magic brand, they all do the same for me)- I rub it into the ends of my hair and I leave it in while I wash my face, shave, etc. At the end of my shower, I have a really wide tooth comb that I'll brush my hair out with while there's still conditioner in it (also a good way to get out the ridiculous amounts of hair that I lose daily) and then I'll rinse it. I towel dry and it's usually good to blow dry without many tangles.
I also sleep on a silk pillow case. Those thing are amazing, you wake up and it's like your hair is still done (if you went to bed with your hair still styled)- almost NO frizz.0 -
Conditioner and my flat iron are my best friends when it come to my baby fine curls.0

Maybe give your ends a proper trim as well? I find that when my ends are split my hair tangles easier.
hmm that makes sense, but i got a trim just 2 weeks ago. also one good thing about having thick hair (well for me anyway) is that i hardly have any split ends.
thanks for the advice everyone! my hair isn't very curly, it's straight with slight waves, but i get more tangles than all of my curly-haired friends! :grumble: i'm definitely going to get a silk pillowcase, 3 minute miracle, and i'll buy some leave-in conditioners0 -
I have thick, naturally curly hair with a wave in it...basically, it looks like a tumbleweed on meth when it's not brushed.
I use regular conditioner, leave-in conditioner & anti-frizz stuff...I can only brush/comb it out when it's wet. Then I put it up in a bun for the day. Or, if I have the patience, I'll straighten it.0 -
Try Acquage conditioner. I get a tub from my stylist for $20 and it lasts a long time! Both my daughter and I have long naturally curly hair which tangles easily - hers is down to her lower back and this makes it easy to comb out. It works wonders!0

I have my mom's curls. Well she has real curls, I have wavy curls and they tangle alot! Plus...I love my hair long.
So....some things I do for my hair.
I almost always wear my hair up. If I wear it down during the day it tangles. Wear it down only for special occasions like a wedding or something like that. Otherwise, I wear it in a braid, a pony tail or a loose bun.
I don't style my hair alot any other way. No curling irons, rollers,or things like that. I don't like putting extra product in my hair like hair spray. It makes it feel...stiff and I think it makes it tangle. I do like to put mouse in sometimes. Like right now I am using a mouse from Aussie I think.
I also do not comb my hair when it is wet. Shampoo, rinse, condition, rinse and air dry. I think combing it wet makes it breakable.
Hope this helps.0
