What does everyone think is a good amount of calories to eat in one day as a 5'3" (and 1/2 :) ) female. I've had success with my current amount but want different opinions

the right amount of calories is not a matter of opinion. it's derived from simple mathematical formulas. enter your MFP profile statistics and goals correctly and follow the guideline it spits out for you.

that guideline can be found in the "Your Daily Summary" box on your news page ("My Home").

idk how to tell you that, if you're looking for a different approach, you could try not counting calories and eating when you get hungry. i had success doing that as well.

It may not be a matter of opinion but it does vary from person to person, even among people of the same height weight and activity level. It depends also upon factors that the calculator doesn't know, such as resting heart rate, usual body temperature, and body fat percentage.

I'm 5'3 and 1/2 as well and I consider a good amount for me is 1400-1600 to maintain my weight at 112 lbs, and that's with an hour of exercise every day. But then I've always had a slow metabolism. Most people of my height and activity level need more food to maintain.

Thanks for the input, if I get gutsy enough to quit counting I might just do that ;)

Did u find what works best for you through trial and error or did you find a more specific calculator?
  • I think if it's working why change it? then once it's not working anymore, re calculate :) good job by the way!

I agree with going back to the recommended setting, although if you're not having any trouble why change? I'm 5'4" (barely), 135 lbs, and I eat 1420 to lose 1/2 pound per week. It seems pretty spot on to me. I eat back most of my exercise calories.

Through a lot of trial and error. I always gain if I go by what the calculator says. I know it works great for some people though.

i don't disagree. BF% could certainly make the calculations more accurate. and since these calculators are only accurate to a certain margin of error, i'm hesitant to say they are exact, but going by those numbers and waiting a few weeks to compare the actual results with the predicted results, and then going back to make adjustments, will allow anyone to zero-in on the correct numbers for themselves.

i just didn't want the OP to be deluged with ED advocates telling her to eat only 800-900 calories, because it worked for those with EDs (sadly there are folks like that out there advocating EDs as healthy lifestyles). the various BMR formulas that exist are reasonably accurate for most people without true medical conditions and should almost always be used as the starting point for determining the right number of calories somebody should eat.
