On the Gym Grunt

So, I was watching a show on Navy Seal training. They were doing pull ups after hours of treacherous swimming, running, rolling in the mud, planks, etc. Ths one guy started grunting while doing his pull ups and the trainer got all in his face, "don't you dare grunt and make faces like its hard. Keep it to yourself." It makes sense. A military man on a mission has no business grunting. That could be a deadly mistake.

Then, I'm in this gym, and this guy is grunting like he's dying. I just had to laugh about it.

No more grunting for me. I want to be badass, like a Navy Seal. Quiet and deadly. :-)

When I started doing weights at the gym, I didn't understand why some of the other people were grunting. Then as my weights got heavier and heavier ... I found out. Now I can't seem to do heavy weights without some sort of noise. I wish it wasn't so.

Not a fan of the grunting either , as long as you breath correctly I can't see why you would need to make any other noises

a little noise is one thing. I have no problem with that. The screamers though....dear lord. "LOOK AT ME WORK OUT RAWR!!!"

we beat this horse in another thread last week.

I am of the opinion that a small grunt is ok when the load is heavy...however, when I am 20 feet away with my music ( headphones) on top volume, and I can STILL hear you grunt/scream like you busted a nut while someone is removing major organs through your nose, THAT is out of control.

I am not quiet when I am doing my strength, I do grunt, but I bet the guy 10 feet away can't hear me!

I'm not a lifting grunter. Don't see a point to it, but I can understand why people do it. It's like people who are quiet during sex and those who are vocal.

Us ladies never grunt no matter how hard it gets... ; )
  • I'm sorry but when I go to the gym I don't wanna have to listen to some guy sounding like he's having sex in the weights room!! :p

grunting helps keep the abdominal walls contracted while lifting. I generally focus initially on keeping that abdominal wall hard, but after enough sets fatigue sets in so I start to grunt involuntarily.

And I usually work out alone, so when I get tired it's either grunt or let the weight drop on me. I prefer to grunt :)

Women can't be real SEALs, but a friend of mine (female) just took a SEAL team training by an ex Navy SEAL and said it was awesome. She feels just a little more like a badass now. Here's the info on it: http://sealteampt.com/

How DO you stop the grunting, though? Any tips? I feel such a fool doing it. I'm fine on warmups - it's only on really heavy (for me) sets.

I imagine my creepy housemate is recording any sounds so he can listen to them later.

If you don't grunt you may still sound like a robot - check out this trainer http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cs-wOHN5tdw

I gave birth silently. But, you bet on the last rep of full body crunches, I am grunting like crazy.

I breath a bit loud. Occasional grunt when approaching 1RM lifts but that's about it.

I personally don't take issue with it. If someone is grunting because they're really moving a weight that's heavy for them, more power to them, get yours.

When I first starting lifting, I never thought I'd grunt - although I had no problem with others who did.

Now, I can't help it! It's not all that loud, but probably noticeable to others near me. This usually happens near the end of a heavy set!

I'll grunt if I want to. If you aren't pushing yourself in the gym, why bother?

This. But I understand the need to grunt so it doesn't bother me too much. The problem is half the time I want to bust up laughing from the noises I hear (which is dangerous if I'm lifting myself).

I'm not mad and I don't care. I didn't realize that it can be controlled as I am a grunter when it really start to get tough. However, when I saw the trainer telling them to not grunt, enev though they were really running out of steam and struggling, I thought that was interesting. Just stop doing it. That's it. Lol.
