New and nervous

Ok so, I'm new to this, though I've been using the app for the last week or so.

I'm way overweight - I've estimated that I'm 365 pounds (I know I'm over 25 stone ) - I currently can't find any scales that show a reading :(

I have lost weight before, but it was so quick - 24 stone down to 17 in 5 months - that I became ill and have piled it all + more back on.

My trousers are 52 inch ish waist (Though my jeans are 50?), and my shirts are about 21 inch neck wise. and to top it all I'm only 5'10 tall.

It will sound daft, but I'm not going to stand on scales till Easter next year after spending 5 months on this. Though I do need to get on some scales asap to see what I currently weigh.

So, I've decided that now at 27 I want to start to move the bulk. My goal - well Its still a little to much but I'd like to get to next December and be 120-130 pounds lighter.

Against me - well, currently I have very little exersize size, I sit down all day in my job and I don't really have any friends that will come swimming with me - I say swimming as I find 'Gyms' off putting.

Happy if any local people want to add as a friend and help me along - anything would be really helpful.

Fingers crossed - I really want to do this and get to next December with less of me, but feeling better

    Hi there,

You have set yourself a realistic target which is good.
10lbs per months. 2.5lbs per week that will be healthy weight loss
You will lose more at the start and keeping a diary on here will help you.
THere are plenty of people here to motivate and encourage you.
Feel free to add me, I will offer you support
  • It's great that you've joined and are doing something to each your goal. I know exactly what you mean about gyms, I do the swimming thing too. I'm on every day and have found that just having friends here really helps motivate me. Anyone can feel free to add me.
  • Welcome to MFP - it's incredibly motivating to have like-minded people here to help support you and help through the inevitable ups and downs. I'm in a very similar situation to yours in that I want to lose a significant amount (I'm starting 'small' though, and set my initial goal to be down 74 pounds for now). Feel free to 'friend' me for moral support; I am on here every day and love the support/ability to support others in the situation. Best of luck! :)

First, I want to say kudos to you for trying to improve your life, that in itself you should be proud of. You seem to have a realistic goal set ahead of yourself, which will keep you motivated and on track. Keep track of your foods and try and do any type of exercise, walk around the block or wherever possible. Some of the DVDs are really fun too. The one thing that has helped me stay on track this time is being motivated by my "friends" on here. When I achieve, or slip, they will always help me by posting encouraging words of wisdom. This really helps when I feel like I want to binge or like I'm not losing fast enough. Feel free to add me. And finally good luck with your journey, you will be amazing!!!
  • Cheers for the messages folks - it helps when you have people doing the same thing as you

Don't be nervous Scott. One of the hardest parts is starting. When I first logged on this summer I truly didn't believe that something so simple as this website would have much success. It truly is a great website and I have met some wonderful people. I have struggled the past couple of months with the weight loss but the people on here have kept me logging in even when I haven't cared as much about my food choices. Slow and steady wins the race :-)

Congratulations on the hardest part...starting! As far as local goes, I'm a half a world away. But I can offer support and encouragement long distance. Feel free to add me if you'd like!

    H Scott,

Big congratulations and welcome to the site. Great desire to do this and a realistic target are the best tools you can have.

With regard to swimming, if you are from UK there are classes at most local pools for various things. Aqua arobics or just adult only swimming for instance. Perhaps rather than rely on friends to be available to go with you, you could do this for yourself. Once you get there the same people are usually around and they are friendly places.

There are loads of friendly encouraging people and also groups you to find to help you with your journey. Add me if you wish. Sandra
