those annoying people at the gym...

I hate those annoying people at the gym who feel the need to compete against you. Honestly, I don't know about you guys but I go to the gym to better myself and work out at my own pace, I could care less if I look lazy compared to the person next to me. Some people are in better shape than others, and it shouldn't be a big competition anyways. I just find it annoying when I'm on a treadmill the person next to me peeks over and kinda check out what I'm doing. People are so nosey sometimes and should mind their own business. I'm sorry, I just had to vent..hope I'm not the only one who notices this. haha

Oh my gosh. Totally feel ya on this one. Try it at an Air Force base with guys trying to outdo ya! Lol I "run" at like 4.5 mph. That wasn't even a choice on the exercise list on here!!!!
  • haha maybe it is the smell, but I know for sure there are people out there who always try to do better than the person next to them! and don't worry, I'm a really slow runner, and plus I hate running. ha I'd rather do almost any other work out other than running.

the trick about the gym is to be so focused on what you are doing and doing it HARD, that you wont even notice anyone else.

    unless they smell really good

    or really bad

What I find really annoying are the people using the squat rack for barbell curls. Makes me (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻

Also people who lift too much. I had to intervene a few times on people squatting way too much weight. If I hadn't been there they would have been seriously injured

This is a funny post. I deliberately avoid looking at another person's machine.

I have to admit, I'll sometimes check out people's machine readouts or what weights they're using for some things, but most of the time it's just curiosity. If it's a bigger/more athletic looking guy though, I won't lie, sometimes it serves as a bit of an ego boost, lol. I stick to leaving it well short of obvious when I do this, however.

Maybe other people find you inspirational and want to aspire to your amazing achievments on the treadmill?

Maybe you need to stop being so self conscious and just workout.

The person prob. isn't even looking at you.. and if they are, they are prob. bored and looking around at everything.

Perhaps they just wanted to exchange a "good morning/evening"? Just nod; usually seals the deal and then you can both get on with training.

THIS ^^^ and in my case, also to make sure your treadmill isn't picking up MY HRM. Not sure why, but for a while, the treadmill to my left ALWAYS picked up my HRM readings.

Its not even nosey people that bug me. The gym I used to go to was mostly big buff guys and the girls would try and get their attention. How do I know this? They dressed extremly skimpy, would stick out their butts if a guy walked by and had a pile of makeup on their faces. You want to pick up a guy, the gyms not the place to do it. I got so annoyed by this one girl taking up the mirror doing who knows what poses trying to get a guy behind us to look at her that I actually said very loudly "If you want to talk to him just go do it because Im getting really tired of you sticking your thong in my face" Well that got her moving away fast and he laughed.

I like to check how fast people are running on the treadmill so i know what the average speed is of most people. Its an important stat to know to survive a zombie apocolypse.

You dont need to outrun a zombie but you need to outrun the slowest person :)

What drives me crazy is people thinking that because they pay $40 a month at a gym they're suddenly entitled to walk around and dictate how other people work out and assume that just because somebody glanced at their "very private" machine that they are some how racing.

Really? I stick my butt out all the time at the gym. And it's not to attract the opposite sex but to exercise proper form. Was this girl squatting by any chance?

She was not squatting, I don't know what she was doing, some sort of stretch maybe. But everytime I went to get a weight or try and look in the mirror I had her butt in my face, her pants were super low and her underwear and crack would pop out. She would look at the guy in the mirror to see if he was looking, He was too focused on his workout to even notice.
  • I do this all the time. I do it to try and better myself. If the person next to me looks "less" fit than me, I make sure sure I am going faster than them. I slack sometimes like everyone else. Maybe I ate too much dinner or had a bad day. If I see the person next to me going 6.5mph and I am only going 5.5, well then ****, I'd better get myself in gear. Goes the other way also. If the person next to me is MORE fit than me and I am going faster than them, it motivates me and tells me I must be doing ok. It has nothing to do with a competition with YOU, it's about bettering MYSELF.

    This

I have done cardio beside person's training for a race. I'm not a runner and have different goals.

I'm pretty positive they could care less what I'm doing and I them .... unless they are yapping on their phone

If there is a hungry lion around it's really important to know if there is at least one person who runs slower than you....

Should you wish to mess with competitive people's heads put a few extra plates on when you finish on a weight machine.

Take it as a compliment. They are checking out how much better you are doing, and therefore, are trying to keep up with you. Think of it as helping someone else get healthier.

Weight machine! Did you miss a word?

And yes people who scatter dumbbells and barbell plates all round the gym annoy me as well.

How about you might be a distraction...I know the other night I was zoned in when a very nice looking lady, that happened to smell good too, set up next to me..Really hard not to look. It was the same thing with the cute girl 3 machines down to my right that had the pony tail "swishing" back and forth. Your look like a very attractive young lady and that could keep guys from looking stright ahead.

That drives me crazy, I go to the gym at 5 am and could care less who is looking or not looking at me. Soon as I walk in my iPod goes on, say good morning to the regulars and get to work. Always slowed by someone the night before to busy to restack their weights...
Apparently that takes from their work out!

I suggest going to the gym in the early am. You wont see many looking to get noticed. Obviously if you are waking up that early to go to the gym generally a higher level of commitment.

for me - I'm a look around person at the gym - not that I care what you're doing and the majority of the time I'm just glancing around not even focusing on anything specific - I'm just a people watcher in general and find the tv's boring. I dont care what you're doing and it always amuses me when the person on the treadmill see's what I'm doing and ups their speed to get past me - my thoughts are have at it - You can run your legs off and I'm not going to try to keep up - I can walk and I can do it at a bit faster pace than I did last week and that's good enough for me - I'll never run on the treadmill (or anywhere else for that matter) because of leg issues - but walking - that I'll be doing forever.
