I'm already a Powerplate personal trainer..with thinking about getting away from that and doing regular PT...Does anyone know what qualifications are needed?

It depends on which type of certification you want. NASM is one of the most recognized and really, all you need is to remember the book.
Now, that just gets you an interview. What good gyms or people look for is experience and attitude. Any one can pass a test and get a cert, just look at Gold's Gyms trainers (sorry to generalize, but its what I see).
I got certified which got me the interview, but my military experience and my personal flair got me the job ( I stopped training people 2 years ago).

First you need to get certified. A couple of the top certifications are NASM or NSCA. Second, if you are going to work for yourself you will need to get liability insurance once you're certified.

Do you know how long it takes? Is there a course I can do at home or do I need to go to school?

I'm certified through the NASM. You study on your own and get 180 days to take the test. They have different packages you can purchase with a book, online material, and even live workshops.

    More info @ http://www.nasm.org/personal-trainer.

    Good luck!
