I ran a 5K on Saturday- not my first 5K by any means, but it was my first one on pavement. My legs are still brutally sore and I have a CrossFit class at 4:30pm. I've been taking a lot of Advil, but what else can I do?

You can take the day off or just try to make it through. Light exercise will actually make your legs feel better. Just don't over do it if they're "I can't walk up the stairs" type of sore.

Go for it, complete your work out, then have some good food and have a long nice sleep

Normally after I do a tough mudder my calves are super sore (I run on my toes) and what tends to help besides anti inflammatories is taking a cold soda can and rolling it against sore muscle for about 10 minutes then heating pad for about 5 minutes then compression sleeves until you do it again normally do it 2x a day and with in 24-36 hours should feel good enough to exercise again. Eat lot of protein as well.

If it's that bad, I would say skip it. Seriously.
I know it sucks but you don't want to hurt yourself and end up unable to do anything for a while.

I wish I had that motivation.

Two whole days off is not the end of the world.

Go ahead and do it if you want. But be ready to deal with the consequences if things get worse.

Skip it and stretch on a foam roller.
  • Have you considered seeing a doctor?

beast it. The best way to get over sore legs is to throw some weight around and forget about them
  • A hot bath with epsom salts. (Oh - and good for you!)

Awe! Haha, I'm not going to die from being sore- just surprised and irritated that I am so sore and have been for two days
  • may want to try some different shoes. I'm former military infantry and my knees have been punished harshly for years. Now at 34, i thought my running days were over. Then I tried some of the minimal style shoes (New Balance), and it really made a big difference. I agree with elprincipito, if you are so sore that it hurts, take an active off day. Don't do a big work out, but maybe go on a short but brisk walk. Just do something easy for for awhile to work out that lactic acid. if your too tired, sore, worn out, your work outs will be useless, possibly even counter active.

    Maybe you weren't hydrated enough?

I get that way if I'm not super hydrated before a race.

    I ran drunk...
The race started at 2pm, but we started drinking at the runner's party at 10am. It was the Santa Speedo Charity Run, so the majority of us were drunk and half naked when we finally got to running, in the rain through Portland haha. So properly hydrated, no, I didn't even think of that.

That's a really good point! I normally run in my Vibrams because usually I'm running 5K adventure races. This time I ran in Reebok EasyTones.

Stop taking the meds. It retards muscle rebuilding. Go to Walmart and get a foam roller pad and use it to massage the muscles. It will hurt but that will stop the hurting much sooner than waiting. The other option is if you have a massager available. Use it on the sore muscles and that will help also.

Take a walk or do some other light exercise. I find a short Pilates routine works wonders for sore muscles. But it you're really that sore, another day off is not a terrible thing.
