Staying on track over the weekend

I am having trouble making good food choices on the weekends. I find that when I break my regular routine of the work week I have trouble staying on track and tend to overeat! Any good ideas that you use that might help me out????

Focus on burning some extra calories on the weekend. You can eat your exercise calories back....but your focus needs to be a calorie burning hike or a run....something that is going to kill some major calories. I have found the more I am into burning calories, the less appealing alot of weekend crap becomes! :laugh:0

Your diary is not open, so I'd ask if you log your food every day? If you don't log on weekends, I think this is the best place to start. Make yourself log everything - even if you eat crap - enter it. Then, make sure your diary is public, at least to your MFP friends. I find that knowing that others can see what I'm eating helps me make better choices.0

I agree! I opened my diary, it was scary at first, but it has been good!0 -
Try and plan your weekend meals ahead of time as much as possible, and remember to take into account if you may be going out to eat. Make some healthy snacks to graze on!0

don't think of it as weekends/holidays/rest days it must become an every day thing apart of your life. you can't just turn it on and off on certain days it must always be a conscious decision. and yes leaving your dairy open to friends is a good way to help make you more accountable to your food decisions. but in the end it must be for yourself whether everyone or no one is watching your intake you know how your treating your body.0

this is exactly what I do...just plan it in advance and stick to it. Also, take advantage of the time on weekends and do a little more exercise and that will allow you some flexibility to stray a bit on nutrition. Good luck0 -
I go for a massive calorie burn on a Saturday morning and try to do something active on a Sunday so that I can relax a bit on Saturday night and socialise with a few beverages. Keeping on track on a weekend is essentially about changing your mindset though. Only keep healthy foods in the house and plan meals in advance0

it's the weekend. not some hedonistic trip with an all you can eat buffet.
maintain control. have discipline. give yourself some wiggle room.
one of the reasons you are struggling on the weekend is because you are probably over-restricting yourself monday through friday.0 -
Definitely keep yourself accountable by logging all of your foods, even if you go over! And keep an open diary so friends can see, and also help you with support!0

Track EVERYTHING!...I used to struggle with this a lot too. Once I started tracking everything, it definitely made me more accountable and think twice about having an extra drink or stopping for fast food after being at the bar. You can do it! Good luck!0

I really struggle with this too. I usually eat at home during the week and it is easy (easier anyway) to know what I am eating and what is in it. But on the weekend I don't want to cook or do dishes, so I tend to go out to dinner Friday/Saturday night.
One thing I am trying is to choose restaurants where I know there are tasty, healthy options or at least reasonable sized portions. These tend to be more expensive, but better tasting than the "more food is a better meal" restaurants. So one nice meal out per weekend = better for my body, same on the budget. And go easy on the appetizers/bread bowl/wine.
Another thing is to meet friends for weekend breakfast instead of dinner. Most places have a two eggs any style option so I can do poached eggs, wheat toast, and fruit. Its something I might make at home (if I could poach eggs), but it gets me that out to eat fix at a more reasonable portion.
Lastly, I accept that I will go over my calorie goal some days and hopefully be under other days. I am focusing on hitting my weekly net calories rather than being right on target everyday.0 -
Spend an hour in the gym on Saturday and Sunday and earn a few extra calories!
Also, the foods that slip you up over the weekend; just try not to have them in the house. Mine is cheese, so I NEVER buy cheese. If I must have it, I'll buy a sandwich with cheese in it rather than a whole block.0
