Looking for Expat friends living in central or south America (or anywhere in the world)! From US needing advice on what I need to do (financially ect) before exiting for good.

I'd say start preparing for your new life so you can adjust easier when you move.
To start, I'd say turn off your HVAC, limit your food options, start drinking questionable water that may make you ill, and give up a number of your freedoms and human rights. Have fun! =D0 -

Good friendly fun. Which is what 99.99999% of the stuff is on here. Don't go getting butthurt and turn it into some bullying thing.

I've lived abroad on several continents. I have also lived in Central America and have been to most other Latin American countries. I now live in Houston.
What specifically are you looking for in the way of information.0 -
I visited Brazil for a month and it wasn't very different from the US at all. In fact most of the places I went to were much better than the US. The water was better too, as was the quality of food. People were nicer too. I would live there in a heartbeat.0

That's a possibiltiy. I've never been there....but am seriously considering Mexico or Costa Rica. LOTS of expats in that area, someone from work just moved down there (permanently). I just don't know if I want to live IN the expat community, or in the country. I would love to own some land or property so I can run a hostil and make some extra cash...0 -

mainly, what's it like living in the expat communtiy. whenever I go, I stay with friends...I actually get the real feel of the country that way, and I LOVE costa rica and mexico! Moreso than here...even though there are a few minor inconveniences. Also, I know in CR you have to leave the country every three months for 72 hours, then re-enter. I was wondering if there was a way around this? Is it the same in Mexico? What about taxes? I know we aren't off the hook :grumble: for taxes in the us, or the country we'll be residing in..but I'd like a baseline of the actual cost of living there.0 -

Only for 3 months at a time, but I believe I have a feel for the country. It's different, but not bad, and the people are so friendly. Am planning to go back for another 3 months sometime in 2013...have been detained here for quite a while.0 -

I'm a dual-national US/Costa Rica. I was born in the USA but of Costa Rican parentage. I have passports from both countries, and a cedula from CR. I know CR intimately well.
Mexico. I live in Houston. I ride my motorcycle down into Mexico twice a year. I've been all over the country. I have also done business there with Pemex.
You can get permanent residence in Costa Rica easily if you have a job there or if you can prove you have income from some other source. However, as you are probably aware, the place is overrun with Gringos (US/Canada, but especially the Canadian variety). This has caused the prices down there to skyrocket. In CR you can own land as a foreigner. In CR you have to pay income taxes if your money is earned within the borders of the country. If you get your income from outside of the country you pay no taxes. However, as a US citizen you have to pay taxes wherever you live unless you renounce US citizenship. I would advise against renouncing.
In Mexico you can live cheaper. However, if you want to ghetto with other expats, then be prepared to pay higher prices like in CR. In Mexico you may not own land unless you are a Mexican. You do have to pay income tax, but there are creative ways to reduce this.
Personally, I enjoy Mexico more. However, I do NOT enjoy the expat community in either Mexico or CR.0 -

I find the expat communites in CR and Mexico to be very similar. They for the most part are pretentious, predictable, and boring. In CR particularly, the nationals are becoming more Americanized by the moment, so if you are looking for that rustic time warp, I would not recommend CR.
For that rustic time warp, I would definitely consider Mexico instead. Outside of Mexico City (DF) things are more the old Latin way. I've been through many a town or small city where things are just beautiful. Parras de La Fuente comes to mind, and it's not too far from the border, a day's ride from the border on my motorcycle. It's an oasis out in the middle of the desert. The first place in the Americas where grapes were cultivated for wine. Natural springs flow out of the ground, and like most Mexican small cities and towns, the place is immaculately clean. There is more exploration to do in Mexico and it is significant exploration outside of DF and the tourist resorts.0 -

While it's nice, the corruption, lack of authority and insecurity is not worth getting a feel for the country.
Also, it's quite the culture shock for a lot of people who have been accustomed to the consumerism and commodity they live in when they realize that those things are rare in 3RD world countries.
As someone who lived in Mexico (Morelia) for 10 years... I'm never going back to live. Ever.0 -

You won't find more of both than in Mexico? I agree. I know from first hand knowledge. If you get into trouble, good luck. The State Dept will not help you. The Mexican police will not help you, as they are worse than the criminals they pretend to pursue.Speaking of insecurity and corruption........
