understanding BMR and TDEE

Is the BMR the total calories you lose on top of your TDEE daily? If that makes any sense at all, trying to get used to these terms!

BMR (or basal metabolic rate) is the amount of calories your body burns just to stay alive. Originally, this was determined by medical professionals to determine the calories needed to sustain life for people in comas. . TDEE (or total daily energy expenditure) is the amount of calories your body burns in a typical day when you are not in a coma. This is the number from which you should subtract your calories to lose weight, such as 500 calories a day to lose a pound a week, keeping in mind that you shouldn't n go lower than you BMR in your calorie intake when restricting your calories.

I hope this helps to clear up the confusion of BMR vs TDEE a little bit.

Actually I think that would be RMR (Resting Metabolic Rate), not BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate). BMR is what your body would need to sustain vital organs if you were completely comatose. Once you go beyond comatose, you're expending more energy even if it's just fidgeting in bed, blinking and thinking.

To the post before that - BMR and TDEE are not the same thing by any stretch of the imagination. TDEE (Total Daily Energy Expenditure) is the sum total of all calories you expend in a day; BMR + NEAT (Non-exercise Activity Thermogenesis) + TEF (Thermic Effect of Feeding) + EAT (Exercise Activity Thermogenesis). In other words, everything you do throughout the day whether it be running, lifting weights, cleaning house, fidgeting at your desk, eating, walking to school, going to the bathroom, etc., etc.
