Ok I know everyone has probably heard this question again and again and I have read up on articles but I'm honestly just looking for the basics, I've never done this before and advice would be helpful from people who were in my shoes.....what do I need to go out and buy, can lifting and strength training be done effectively at home??
Any help appreciated :).

This! I'm on stage 2 and the definition I've developed is more than I ever expected.

If you're lifting at a gym, ask them about some kind of orientation to the equipment so you learn how to use things with decent form.

Then get a program. Starting Strength, strong lifts, New Rules of Lifting... all are good, there are lots of others depending on what you want and what equipment you have access too.

If you want to do it at home look at programs like chalean extreme or p90x. They are designed for fat loss and contain weight training. Or you can look for routines on youtube with free weights or resistance bands or go to www.bodyrock.tv.

Thanks for the advice everyone...going to start with the 5x5 and take it from there, hope this will prove to be beneficial and a nice break from cardio.
