Does anyone else change gyms every few years?

I've been changing gyms every few years since my 20s. I just get bored, cranky, etc. A new gym tends to energize me.

I *was* at the fancy gym. Loved it. Hated the 75 dollar fee.
Then I was at the hard body gym. Hated that start to finish. (even though it was 32 bucks)
Now I'm at the Y. Like it. (love the 34 bucks) Hate the hours (mine doesn't open til NOON on Sunday).

I'm pondering going back to the fancy gym....
Or risking all the bad reviews on the internet and trying planet fitness. EVERYTHING I've read on the web about planet fitness is negative, from the unethical billing practices (which worries me) to the meat market feel (which doesn't lol)

Does any one else change every few years?

ps: I should add: I work at a university, so I technically have a free gym membership. However, they open at 11 on sundays, and they close for weeks during holidays, when I have the most time, so I always keep a membership, and use the U gym when it's convenient.

planet fitness sucks. I've been there before (used to be a member).

no free weights. it's basically a "fitness" club for fat people and cardio bunnies.
If you aren't trying to do anything out of the ordinary it would probably work. (if you just do cardio and some light weight training and don't care to squat/bench/deadlift)

I've looked around a bit, and wasn't thrilled with the weights, yeah. I do tend to do free weights, some work with a smith machine (I work out alone) and some machines for legs.

I've changed gyms a few times, not because I wanted to, but because I moved to different states. My favorite gym was in North Miami Beach, Fl- LA Fitness. It was freaking HUGE. I felt very comfortable doing weights and cardio there. I now live in Las Vegas and I joined 24 hour fitness about a month ago. I'm not a huge fan of this particular gym. Some of the machines are broken, it's a bit small and at 5pm it's freaking packed.

Get a personal trainer friend. My friend works at the fancy gym, and i get a full membership for $30 a month. It beats the crap out of Planet Fitness, which is where i used to go.
  • I treat my gym like you would a favorite pair of jeans; if it provides everything I want and is clean I will not leave. I was a member with my previous gym for over 4yrs and left only because they decided to increase the rates whilst cutting back on classes and closing the location nearest to me. So I said bye bye. I am now at another one which is pricey ($75) but it has awesome classes, it is conveniently located, so no excuses, and it is so clean which is a MUST for me. If you feel like you are getting bored, try switching things up by going to classes, speaking to the sales person who signed you up and see if they can get you a discount on a PT session (trust me it works!) or look through fitness magazines for new and fun exercises that can keep you alert at the gym. Hope this helps and please by all means avoid Planet Fitness, I have heard nothing but horror stories about that gym:embarassed:

I go to Planet Fitness and I love it. There are PLENTY of free weights, btw. Not sure why the other posters' Planet Fitnesses wouldn't have. I've only ever been a member of PF, though. It has plenty of machines, cardio options, free weights, mats, medicine balls, etc. I don't think I'd ever pay more than $10 a month for a gym unless I could get unlimited personal training.
  • I've been to 3 so far yeah

My local leisure centres gym seems to be my foundation, where I started and where I always end up back at. I am there now too.

Been to a old school body builder gym for a few month and also been to another leisure centres gym but this one had much better equipment than my local one.

I am on the verge of changing gyms again soon to my colleges gym too as this will be easier for me.

Thanks guys. The Y has been good to me, but I must admit the sunday hours are killing me! I am an early morning workout gal, and noon is not early!!

    Keep giving me suggestions!

I run outside if the weather is reasonable, and lift a few days a week.
