Just Can't Do It Sometimes

I'm 18-years-old and I really need to loose weight. Every time I go to do it I cave in and end eating too much or not exercising enough. I really need some support. I keep telling my boyfriend how much I want to do this, but he keeps telling me I don't need it and I'm perfect the way I am. My friend also wants to loose weight, but she's worst them me when it comes to caving.

I already lost two pounds in just one week. I don't feel hungry, but I always want food. When I exercise I always have a headache afterwards. Is this normal?

I want to be 125 lbs by this summer. I weight 170 lbs right now. Is this a reasonable goal? Anymore else trying to loose around 50 lbs in about seven months? :ohwell:

Get rid of the word Can't. Use the word CAN and Will.

    I CAN do this.
    I WILL do this.

Just keep thinking those things. It makes a world of difference :)

PS: Tell your bf that even though he doesn't think you need it, that you do and you would like him to support you.
  • Hey, just take it one day at a time. Set modest goals that you can achieve to build up your confidence. A lot of small changes will lead to a big change. What is your exercise routine like? What are you doing for work outs that's giving you a headache?

When I was a teenager, I did a lot of yo-yo dieting. I would decide that for a month, I would eat super healthy and go to the gym and lose lots of weight and feel great. Ultimately, the diet was too strict and I got tired or tempted by delicious food...and then I would quit and give up. A week later, I would start again. It never worked.

If you want to lose weight, you have to learn how to make it a lifestyle. Find ways to make it work for you. Learn how to be flexible. Eat well 80% of the time and try to make it to the gym 3x/week. Start small and build up from there. Baby steps. Think of every day as a new day. If you messed up and ate more than you should have yesterday, today's the day to start again and be healthy (but don't deprive or "punish" yourself for your past mistakes).

When I started finally getting in shape, I began by going to the gym 2x/week. I ate healthy most of the time, but I also ate a lot of ice cream and chocolate. When I started seeing results, I was further motivated. I read more online. I cleaned up my diet. I started going to the gym 3-4x/week. I didn't want sweets all the time like before. But I always leave room for a delicious meal or tasty cupcake or Reese's every now and then. The point was getting down my staples (lots of protein, healthy fats, veggies, and complex carbs) and leaving room for treats here and there. The difference is that I plan for them and I make them work in my overall plan. Most of the time now, I eat the same 5 meals in rotation -- they're tasty, easy to make, and healthy.

If you're getting headaches after you exercise, you might be dehydrated. Drink more water. Aim for a 1lb/week weight loss until you get the hang of it. If you're in a groove and want to try for 2lbs/week, then go ahead. But remember: this journey is a marathon, not a sprint. You're beautiful and loved the way you are. Take one step at a time and you'll get there.
  • Don't tell people your goal as your mind will act as if you have already done it since you get positive feedback.

No matter what you need to keep going. You can only control what you do.

I suggest eating and don't try starving or fasting as a method to lose weight. Your body needs to adjust .. use the BMR calculators here and work from there .. I would not recommend going below MFP's recommendations for your daily intake.

Next.. it's okay to go over your protein and fiber intake .. Good carbs (high in fiber) and protein will keep you feeling full longer and give you energy.

Nuts, cottage cheese, greek yogurts are great sources of protein .. as well as canned tuna, fish and other meats. :-) Do some research and google healthy foods high in proteins and fibers .. there's a ton of information out there :-)

You CAN'T fail, you CAN do work. Change your mentality.
  • I feel the same way today. Some days you just want food! Drink lots of liquids, even a Gatorade if you are getting headaches from exercising. I went through this at the beginning and now just drink plain water. It takes your body a month or two to adjust to the fluid loss of sweat.
When I am hungry I drink tea, in fact I am going to make some now. Thanks for this post . You made me realize other people have a hard time too.

you are right. getting fit and really caring about your body is not for everyone. just go to Wal Mart or any mall and see all the people who don't care and have also given up.

maybe you are not one of us.

    that is ok.

stay over weight and un healthy.

if it was easy, everyone would be doing it.

don't feel guilty if you can't handle it.

Take the first step by changing your name from 'when_will_it_happen" to something more like, I'm_making_this_happen.

Don't be defeatist right out of the gate. Everything matters, including your self-talk, and your screen name here.

Is it possible? Sure. I'm more than twice your age. Down 35 pounds in 5 months. The biggest single factor in answering the question "Is it likely?" is your commitment to the process. That's the part you need to get nailed down. Is being thin by summer enough to motivate you?
  • Thanks it's great to know that I am not the only one who feels like this. :flowerforyou:
