Two bad days in a row

Well, two not-so-good days over this weekend for me. This looks like a good hint of how the holiday season could go.

Does anyone have any hints about how to get through the holidays? To be honest, I don't mind that much if things slow down over the season, but I fear losing momentum and failing to get back into the swing of things afterwards.

I'm basically fine when I control my own food, but when visiting relatives and friends, it's sometimes difficult to get the foods I'm eating right now.

Eat as healthy and on target calorie-wise as you can on regular days. Allow yourself to eat maintenance on the days you are with other people, at parties, etc. I am now maintaining, but last year I ate at maintenance through the month of December and didn't gain. It did allow me room for an extra cookie, a few drinks, or other holiday treats.

It is easy to use the month of December as an excuse to let loose but don't blow all of your hard work to hell for a few short weeks of partying.

Usually on trips and vacations, I just end up eating less and going pretty hungry because I can't find much decent food to eat. I'll lose 2-5 lbs on a week of vacation... I just look at is as weight loss made easy rather than an excuse to eat crap I don't normally eat. However, I have a pretty strict diet due to food allergies, so my choice is go hungry or be sick.

Can you tell me more about eating maintenance? I have no idea what (for me) that means.

Yeah, I find that backfires on me. I get hungry, weak, headache-y, and then compensate by over-eating. Glad it works for you though - sounds very difficult with allergies.

You eat at your daily energy expenditure - you eat the same number of calories that you use up, so you don't gain or lose. There's online calculators to help you estimate, and there's a spreadsheet floating around somewhere on the forums that you can download.

Go into parties with a plan. You will have no more than two drinks, you will only have one cookie, etc. Be selective, and only eat the things you know you're really, really going to enjoy.

Go to the "my home tab" and then click goals

Change your goal weight to your current weight, and then scroll down and change to maintain weight instead o 1-2 pounds per week. This will keep you exactly where you are and likely give you some more freedom in your diet, if you feel its necessary

Along with this, I would continue to exercise regularly, because you may be splurging a bit, and exercising will make you feel like you are still keeping up with your diet. also consider that when you change your goals to maintenance, anything over that number will have you gain (though likely not much)

One more thing..... if you completely blow it in December despite your best efforts, it is one month out of your life, it is no reason to shrug and say 'well that didn't work, I may as well just give up now'.
No. You pick your self back up and put in a consistent effort. We cant all be angels during the holidays but that doesnt mean we shoudn't give a consistent, long lasting effort!

    Good luck!
  • I'm struggling with this holiday season as well. What I find that helps a little is if you cook and eat your own food before visiting others. It's always best to go on a full stomach. That way when you do eat over faimly and friends house you dont eat as much and if your really tempted try having a glass of water before you pick up that extra plate or piece of pie. As far as drinks goes there's a new vodka out called "skinny girls" with less calories and they also have diffrent flavors and recipies on there website.

Just don't let 2 days be 2 months. A couple days here and there when an event is happening is one thing, but thinking you can go hog wild for the whole holiday season is another. Pick those couple days when you're going to be splurgy - so you know you will have a treat on those days and you don't NEED to eat the treats every single other day also.
