HI! I am a fitness instructor & teach quite a few classes. In a recent lunchtime Spinning class, a man (a regular) said, "You'd think you'd be skinny with all the classes you teach." He said it in front of 9 other men. I was floored, didn't know what to say, so shrugged it off. What was I supposed to say after that? Hard to not let it bother me. Can't quit thinking about it.

Well, speaking for the male race I can say that many of us think that we're being cute or witty or doing a good job of breaking the ice, when in fact we're being huge jerkfaces of monumental proportions. All you can do is shrug it off, ignore him, he'll probably get the message. =)

Either that or you could 'accidentally' drop a dumbbell on his foot.

Maybe he meant it in a good way like you should be a twig from all the spinning but instead you have nice body or meat on your bones? You know some men aren't very good at expressing themselves, either way I wouldn't let it bother me too much.

Remind him, You don't have to be skinny to be fit and healthy.
Lots of skinny people are in worse 'shape' than someone with a few pounds who works out.
Maybe he needs to know that. Lots of people don't.
Or yeah, drop a barbell on his toe:laugh:

"You'd think that with all of the classes you take, one of them would have taught you manners."

I honestly would've just stood there with tears in my eyes. But the Sarah on the inside, would've said I thought you'd be in a lot better shape too, huh? JK to the latter.

Some guys just have a way of sticking their foot in their mouths, even when they're complimenting someone. If he said it in front of other guys he probably meant it in a good way. Most guys don't try to get catty or malicious with a woman especially when they're other men around. I think it's human nature to let it drive you crazy, and start to become a bit insecure, but I checked out your picture and you're really pretty.
  • Thanks for the great replies! Made me smile & chuckle. :) I guess it definitely had a good result: I found myfitnesspal and all of you guys!!! xo

^I completely agree. Some guys say things without realizing that they're even being a complete *kitten*. Take with a grain of salt and just do your thing.

Something else, if that guy is just a normal nice guy generally and not a chronic jerk, I would bet you he walked away from that encounter saying to himself "why the hell did I say that?", realizing at some later point he erred. Especially if he's a young guy, they haven't figured out anything yet. =)

You know, you could always lead him to a flight of stairs and then kick him down said stairs, "This is Sparta" style. ;)

I laughed. This would be yet another way to solve the problem. =)
  • Thanks for the comments & support.... I do wonder if he hassles other women...... probably does. We all aren't built like VS models!

Does this guy make comments like this a lot? To you or to others? Does he act like a jerk in general?

If not, then he probably just wasn't thinking and you should let it go.

If he does, then he's just an @$$ and you should also let it go.
