This does not take into account people on a deficit or working out. Plus, it does not cite studies which is pretty typical for a 'news' article.

Having just completed my nutrition final this morning, I can say that the article is spot on despite the lack of citations. Most people are fine with 0.8g per kg of lean body weight and athletes can get up to 1.5g per kg of lean body weight. Sometimes I think we all get a bit obsessive with our protein intake but its just to distract ourselves from what we really want...deliciously moist birthday cake.

Meh. It says "need," not "optimum." When I'm being told how much I need merely to avoid malnutrition and anorexia, I'm going to go ahead and assume that I could actually use a good deal more than that.

Yeah, I thought it was interesting in so much as it gave what was "needed" so at least that is some kind of baseline. I would be interested in knowing how to determine what you actually need when dieting and working out though...

What a clustersfluck of an article - mixes grams and ounces and pounds and does some strange calculation for assumed lean body mass percent while trying to teach a math short-cut?

    Srsly?
  • 1.25-1.5g per lb of LEAN body mass. But many and including myself see great results at 1.5g per lb of weight (only if you a relatively lean)

Here's one of several articles by Lyle McDonald in which he discusses the topic:

Poke around his site - there are a lot of other interesting articles about training and nutrition.
