Sugar

Hi MFP family,

It would be great to hear your thoughts on the natural sugars that occurs in fruit and milk. It's only been in the last couple of days that I have been taking a bit more of an interest in my macro nutrients and I wasn't surprised to see that my sugar intake is very high...from my diary it looks like my cereal and yoghurt are the major culprits....but I've been enjoying strawberries and bananas lately and they're pretty high too. Should I be worried about my sugar intake...even if it's the natural kind? It would be great to hear from others who are/have been addicted to sugar and how they've reduced or even eliminated (if that's even possible?) from their diet?

Thanks :)

Most dieticians won't count intrinsic milk sugars nor in a modest amount of fresh fruit: there is little sugar in plain live yoghurt or low fat soft cheese, berries, many vegetables. Bananas are shocking, they are my favourite fruit so that upsets me!! You can't eliminate all sugar unless you eliminate all starchy carbs, all fruit, all vegetables, nuts and seeds ..... there is a little in many plant foods.

Natural sugars in fruit and milk are good sugars. Though you don't want to overeat those foods either, just like you don't want to overeat any other food. Flavoured yogurt will have processed sugars, but you can get around that by having plain yogurt and adding fresh fruit to it or whatever you're so inclined to add. As long as you're not eating an obscene amount of fruit or dairy, I wouldn't worry too much about it. I took sugars off and starting tracking another nutrient instead as it was also making me crazy :)
