Has anyone leaned out (with pics)?

I was just curious, but I feel like I see pictures all the time of people loosing weight first and then bulking up. Has anyone out there bulked up muscle first, and then shed the fat afterwords successfully?

It's not one, then the other. If you're lifting...you're losing fat while increasing muscle. Most of my friends can weigh on in this.

I posted my pics up in here today... dropped 44lbs of fat according to BF% and about 40lbs total so only gained about 4lbs of muscle I think. Somewhere around there.

By lifting, I've lost about 5 inches off my waist, hips, and thighs, but stayed the same weight (+/- 1-2 lbs). This means I really lost fat while maintaining and building muscle since a lb of muscle takes up so much less space than fat. :)

I started doing strength training when I was still 50 pounds from goal.

not that my results will convince anyone else, cause no one ever does anything unless they want to, no matter what magic words or pictures people give them, so - if you want to change, good for you. Go prove it now.

You can do both to a certain point. The problem is that it takes longer and most people aren't that patient so we normally tend to focus on one or the other. It takes a slight excess of calories to build muscle. If you were really diligent you could eat a small surplus and gain some muscle without the extra fat but people tend to just go crazy and throw as much food as possible at the issue so they don't miss out on muscle gains.

On the plus side if you're making slight improvements in muscle mass and keeping your body fat % down or decreasing you're going to look more muscular than someone who was just eating to bulk. Sure they're stronger but you look tons better and you're probably in better overall health.

Sure, that's the standard procedure that bodybuilders use. You should see some off season photos of them. They look like big tubs of meat with little definition. They eat and eat off season and bulk up then start trimming down and leaning out when they cut afterwards.

I was doing this to some degree in the past. I was working out hard and eating tons without too much worry about my weight. I changed my mind at the beginning of this year. I'd rather be a bit thinner and leaner and in good shape all the time. I'm not competing in shows for muscular appearance. It's pretty hard to get good running times when you're 250 lbs too. LOL

    I leaned over.
I got the nickname "MsDover" from someone noticing that if you say my first name, Eileen, followed by the word "Dover" this is what you get.

Also, this is the very first time "pics or it didn't happen" actually worked for me.

Diet dictates results. If you're lifting and you're gaining substantial size then the lifter needs to re-evaluate their diet because they're likely eating in great excess of their RMR. If lifting and losing weight then you're eating at a deficit, hence the weight loss. Remember that bulking is not the appearance of muscle definition (shape and striations), that's just re-composition or the results of losing body-fat. Bulking is a true gain in a muscle's size / mass.

Not true. We got to evaluate DaniD's nasal cavity. Looks like she's doing a good job blowing her nose. I don't see anything.

THIS! It just goes to show weight doesn't mean everything people think. I weigh less than you and boy let me tell you...our bodies are way apart! I look dreadful at where I am at. Well, maybe not dreadful but nowhere near as good as you. I just started lifting last night so I'm on my way though! lol

You look great, so lift whenever you want too. There really is no need to have a cut and bulking phase. Just lift to keep the muscle you have, and adjust your calories to meet your goals.

Well since August, I have lost about 38 pounds, almost 8 inches off my waist while increasing my weights lifted by 20-35% depending on the exercise. I thinik that evidence would suggest that I have added muscle while shedding fat at the same time but maybe I am wrong. Regardless, i am happy with the way I am progressing while lifting weights to get stronger while still decreasing my overall body weight but that's just my personal journey.
