Hi everyone!

I joined MFP a little while ago and haven't been that diligent about tracking my meals. I have Hashimoto's disease (hypothyroid) and at a recent visit to my new endocrinologist he revealed that I need to really watch my carb intake. He recommended some books and programs and I've been using this site regularly since (about 1 week).

I would really like to know if anyone else on here is following a similar plan because I could use the support.

I'm on low carb too. I have PCOS so my doc reccommended it as well. I'd love to lend and recieve support. It's really hard some days to stick with it. Especially if your house is not a low carb environment. we could be friends and watch each others diaries. :) Wishing you strength!

Yeah! I would love that. My house is definitely NOT low-carb :frown:

How has it been working for you? I have dropped some water weight so far and I'm hoping that translates into some real weight soon :ohwell:
  • Hey hun, i too have PCOS but my doc has never recommened a low cab diet, do you find it has made a difference for you ?

I don't have health issues but I notice that I just do better on less carbs. With the exception of fruit, I try to stay away from the carbs that turn quickly to sugars in your system, mainly breads and pasta and, well, sugar. I do eat freely of fruits, veggies, nonglutenous grains, nuts and seeds without any regrets of what I'm not eating.

It has made a huge difference. I was literally losing ounces or nothing without the low carb even with working out. I lose weight easier on low carb. You should always talk to your doctor. The metformin helps and it doesn't bother me almost at all when I'm on low carb. I actually need to get to doc to get a prescription for more metformin.

valleyp- I had tried Atkins years ago and did not do so well. I initially lost 20 lbs in two months but fell off the wagon over thanksgiving and gained it all back and then some. So, I was really skiddish about all this low-carb stuff until I started reading about glycemic index and glycemic load. Now, since I can have some bread and nuts and fruit I don't feel so deprived. This week has actually been pretty easy (as far as lunch and breakfast go) and I've been feeling good.

I am having trouble with dinner ideas. I used to eat a lot of pasta (though it was whole wheat) and rice and couscous. I notice now though that I really can't have carbs in the evening.

It works great. My energy is better. I'm sleeping better. My house is no where near low carb. I have to get me tons of carb friendly snacks so I'm not tempted by my families snacks. That's been my best find. Lots so its not the same things.
You will lose just keep on it. don't cheat! tha's very important. I give myself a free day every 2 weeks. but, I try not to eat junk more like pasta or fruit. NOw that's try! :) lol

If you lost 20 lbs in 2 mos. on the Adkins diet, then I would say you did very well on it. It sounds like when you reverted to old habits is where you didn't do well. I understand that Adkins is pretty restrictive and I don't think it is necessary to go that extream unless you have to. Also, making changes takes some getting used to but it doesn't have to mean feeling deprived. Personally, I don't care much for pasta, so I don't miss it ever, but I do occasionally want a sandwich and, since it is just occasionally, I go ahead and have one but I try to eat it on Ezekiel (sprouted grain) bread. I'll try to eat a taco salad instead of a taco or eat just the fajita fixins and not the tortilla.

I guess I should elaborate

The weight loss on Atkins was great but I didn't feel great; and you're right it was definitely when I went back to old habits that I packed the weight back on. I think it was the sudden withdrawal of all carbs including fruits that made me want to devour a sugar factory  ... this time around I feel loads better. I found a Nature's Own bread that does not have any high fructose corn syrup added and has the lowest GL (3 pts/slice) that I could find in the store. So, I'll have that in the morning. For snacks and lunches I bought some Wasa crispbread that is <2pts/slice. Where I really try to limit the carbs is in the afternoon and at dinner. So far, so good.

You very well may not have needed to curb nearly as many carbs as the Adkins diet directs. And, you probably did go thru carb withdrawls and felt crappy. I did the Maker's Diet program and after the first two days I had a headache and was nauseaus like I was hungover, lol. I did feel better by the fourth day but one of the restrictions was a limit of sugars of all types and I felt like I was going to go mad without it. I also lost 6 lbs the first two weeks but once I gradually added back in some of the grains and startchy fruits, etc, per the program's directions, I stopped losing weight, But, I felt tons better and for the most part continue to follow many of the principles of the diet. For our supper meals, I mainly make a meat and veggies, eliminating pasta or bread for the most part. My little boys don't like potatos so we don't have them often but when we do I leave the skins on. We may have steak and buttered broccoli or chicken and a nice salad, or pork chops and sweet potato fries. You might find that eating nonglutenous grains such as quinoa or brown or wild rice will have a better effect on you. I have also found that it is better to eat more during the day, when you can burn off the calories and eat lighter in the evening when your body is preparing to rest and the metabolism slows a bit.

You hit the nail on the head valleyp!!!! I had headaches and a dry pasty mouth that no amount of water could get rid of.

Where do you find quinoa and non-glutenous grains? I've heard a lot about quinoa but I've never seen it :ohwell:

I get quinoa from my local healthfood store and recently got the best price on it at Costco of all places. You will need to rinse it in a fine mesh sieve before cooking, as it has a bitter coating that is removed with rinsing, and then cook it as you would brown rice (about 1 cup of quinoa to 2 cups water, simmer covered for about 20 mins). Quinoa isn't really a grain, it is actually a seed, but I often eat it in place of oatmeal or brown rice. Nonglutenous grains are quinoa, brown or wild rice, buckwheat, millet and a few others that I can't think of off the top of my head. I mainly stay away from wheat (unless it is sprouted, like in the Ezekiel bread) and tho some people say oatmeal is ok, I don't do well on it.
