 I am going to purchase a Jillian Michaels workout DVD but I dont know which is better. I was hoping to lose a few inches and tone up a bit with a goal of 3 months. Is the '30 Day Shred' or 'Extreme shed and shred' better?

I know it's going to be a personal preference, but I like 30 DS best. I've done that for a full month, as well as Ripped in 30 for a month. I tried Extreme Shed and Shred once and didn't care for it as much (longer workout with moves I didn't like that are more like kick boxing) and I tried level 1 of Six Week Six Pack, which was okay, but I feel like 30 DS or RI30 are better at hitting more muscle groups while still taking care of abs (for the 6 pack) .

30 Day Shred, Ripped in 30, Banish Fat Boost Metabolism, and No More Trouble Zones are all excellent DVD's.

Something else to consider that I just thought of. I started with 30DS, which is the shortest workout of all of them (20 minutes plus warm up and cool down). RI30 and 6W6P are a little longer and Extreme Shed and Shred was I think about twice as long. Being new to that kind of workout, I like that I started with the shorter one and then moved on to the longer workouts after I had lost some inches and increased my strength. I don't know where you are starting from, but if you are close to scratch like I was, 30 DS is IMO the best place to start (although I know some people with knee problems don't do well with it).
