Drinking your veggies?

Hey all,

Since I've gotten back into logging food, I realize I do not get enough veggies in my diet! I partially feel this is due to being the only person in my house who *tries* to eat fresh vegetables. I limit buying them because they go bad so quickly!

That aside, I know I need to get more veggies, but am not a fan of frozen ones. How do you feel about drinking vegetable purees, such as V8 and the like? I just bought a bottle of V8 low sodium, and am hoping this will help. It also seems like a good "snack" to help fill me up in between meals. Thoughts?

Thanks! LG

I hate mostly all veggies, and the only way for me to get them down without gagging is by throwing them into a smoothie. The fruit totally overpowers the taste of the veggie making it easier for me, and it's actually quite delicious even if the green color is a little disturbing.

I usually buy fresh Spinach, kale, broc etc..and since I have at least one protein smoothie a day I will consume all my fresh greens by weeks end without them going bad.

I've never had a V8, but I'm personally a big fan of drinking my veggies. I say go for it.

danielg810, is KyoGreen a supplement that has vitmains and minerals found in veggies? I'm looking into it and am not quite sure what it is!
  • I dont eat anything thats green or in the veggie catagory. I throw all mine in my smoothies so I can get them in my diet. Fruits hide the taste so the color doesnt bother me. I say go for it
  • Smoothie all the way!!!

Don't really know what V8 is, but I would recommend making your own.

That way it's a lot fresher and you know there's nothing bad in there.

Just add some greens to your fruit smoothies. You may want to build it up by adding very little greens at first and then adding more and more. If you throw in lots of greens straight away, you probably wont like the taste very much.

You will go through quite a lot of veg by putting them in a blender, so you don't have to worry about them going off.

V8 is loaded with sodium. Any juice or puree on the shelf will have been pasteurized, and will have lost most of it's nutrition by the time you drink it. You can juice your own veggies if you get a juicer.

Juicing is better than nothing, but if you only juice, you tend to lose out on the pulp of the fruit or veg, so lose some of the fibre you would get through eating it whole.

    Oh yeah, don't juice it.

Just throw it in a blender, that way you still have all the fibers and the nutrients in them.

I use a product called Greens Plus. A tablespoon is comparable to 4 servings of vegetables. That being said, if you only mix it with water it tastes like *kitten*. I blend it in with the protien shake that I drink daily.

I looove juicing!! Fruits and veggies are fantastic and it makes my skin feel great as an added bonus. you can message me if you want. I love juicing apples, putting them in a pot and heating it up and then adding cinnamon. Yummy!!!

Isn't V8 mainly juice not puree? The research supports consuming whole produce in the full rainbow of colours not vast quantities of juice, all juicing does is concentrate the sugars and remove the healthy fibre. Fibre keeps you regular, keeps you full, feeds the beneficial bacteria in your gut that form part of your immune system and help you absorb nutrients. Sugars promote the inflammation that is implicated in numerous health complaints, spikes and troughs your blood sugar contributing to cravings, feed bacteria you don't want populating your gut. The chlorophyll is rich in certain minerals, so discard anything that is still green and you are chucking away micronutrients.

Many vegetables don't go bad quickly if you store them properly: carrots, sweet potatoes, parsnips, onions, cabbage, celery last very well for example. Leafy things last better in a tupperware box lined with kitchen paper rather than in a bag, broccoli and cauliflower you can stand in water like a bunch of flowers to revive. Don't forget canned (beans, lentils, tomatoes) and dried (fruit, split peas). I eat quite a bit of frozen green vegetables, but often as blended soups or smoothies rather than a standalone item on my plate.

I've always wanted to try putting veggies in a smoothie, don't have a good enough blender at the moment, but it's definitely on my list of things to get!

My aunt & uncle got a Nutribullet a few months ago and use it every day to get more veggies in. They love it. Hubby & I are planning to get one soon. The nice thing about the NB is that it purees the entire fruit/veggie so you don't lose all the fiber, etc. you would by normal juicers.
