Wow. I weighed my breakfast this morning....

All this time I've been having a small bowl of Jordan's muesli every morning. I always made a small bowl, thinking "oh, this is pretty small, it's deffinitely under 50g." ... wrong!!
In fact, I was having 90G. I was so shocked... The nutritional information says 50g = 221 calories, etc.
So all this time.... I was getting around 397.8 calories for breakfast.
No wonder I haven't been losing as much as I thought! Arrghh!
I'm sticking to Weetabix now! At least this way, I know how much I'm having.

A valuable lesson learned.

I weighed muesli too and was also shocked at the amount of calories per 40g, it's like not even half a bowl! So I added a chopped banana to fill it out and look like more, and still tastes good too

I also discovered this recently! Not enough to feed a hamster 40g is it! I've started have 40g of porridge with some fruit and linseed instead, 40g of porridge doesn't look a lot when you weigh it but it makes loads is low calorie and delicious and keeps you full til lunch! x

I have a home made smoothy every morning. sounds hard work but it is really easy. one banana, hand full of frozen fruit and some apple juice. its about 130 cals and keep me full till lunch time. I add a spoon of flax seed which helps keep you full up and have extra nutrients in.

Agreed there, I've started eating more porridge too, and it does tend to keep me full until lunch!

Wow! Those scales are awesome!! I am going to look for one too! I weigh everything! What I have found is that if I don't, bit by bit I begin to overestimate.

I second the oatmeal for breakfast. It's what I eat every morning, and I use Trader Joe's Complete Oatmeal. It has added fiber so it keeps me full all morning. It also has added vitamins and stuff, even better! It's 210 calories for one packet, add some chopped fruit to and it's delicious.

I always measure everything unless its pre-measured or weighed. Occasionally Ill eyeball stuff I use all the time because Ive measured it out so many times in the past. Anything that's new that Ive never had or self cut portions of chicken or other meats I always measure because its to easy to misjudge as you now know.

Also on a side note. Breakfast is supposed to be your largest meal. I struggle with not eating enough in the morning. So just keep eating your double portion and adjust in the evening.

I just weighed in my 2 cups of multigrain cheerios and guess what - it's so misleading! 2 cups (level, not heaping) weighed in at 81 grams not the 58 the box suggests it should be. The box says 1 cup (29g) but that's so wrong! I weighed out 58 grams and then filled up the measuring cup - there was 1 cup plus about 20 cheerios left in the bowl for 2 servings by weight.

How can they do that to us? using 2 measured cups is almost 3 servings. Now granted, I can afford to have the extra calories at breakfast, but still - how can we be true to ourselves if the products we're consuming are not truthful? I'm really disappointed too because I prefer to eat the 2 measured cups - it's just enough but that will throw my other nutrients off the chart.

So how do we know if their nutritional information is based on measured cups or on weight? The item for MGC on here has a serving size of 1 cup but I know I'm not eating 1 cup when I weigh it out for 2 servings. I've been using it anyway because by the box and weight I'm eating two servings but I don't know what my numbers are really representing.

If that's the case with most foods, shouldn't everything solid be listed here by weight and all liquids by measure? How can we log accurately if we don't know what the true values are?

so now that I know I'm really only eating one cup of cheerios, do I use 1 cup in my log or 2 cups because I know I'm weighing out two portions?

I eat oatmeal and now use the measuring scoop that comes with the packet. That way I know exactly how much I'm eating. I used to estimate (until I tried the measuring scoop and discovered that I had been under-estimating what I was eating by about 20 calories. Not a lot I know but every calorie counts when counting calories  )
